Staffing and Sabbatical News: It is "Something About Mary"
Aloha All Saints’ ‘Ohana and Friends,

Happy New Year! I want to take this opportunity to share some important news/information with the congregation. I have invited The Reverend Mary Tudela to join me on the All Saints’ leadership team as the Associate for Lay Formation and Leadership Developmen t . I’m delighted that she has agreed to serve in this capacity.

Reverend Mary is a talented and trusted pastor, colleague, and friend. She brings to the role an extraordinary background and skill-set in executive and church leadership. We are so blessed to have Reverend Mary in our ‘Ohana. I am grateful for her service and look forward to the fruits of her labor.

Beginning in February, Reverend Mary will also begin preaching once a month at All Saints’. She is currently spending her free time designing a Lenten adult study which she intends to publish in both English and Spanish for use in Lent 2019. The series is tentatively titled: “The Summary of the Law - How do I best love God and my neighbors?”  Reverend Mary will lead our Lenten adult education and formation class this coming Lent. More details will be published in The Epistle and The Gold Sheet in the coming weeks. Reverend Mary will continue to serve mainline churches as Clergy and Congregational Care Consultant affiliated with the Samaritan Counseling Center in Barrington, Illinois.

Throughout the past year, the Vestry and I have shared with you my anticipated sabbatical in 2018. Sabbatical allows both the clergy and the congregation an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and reaffirmation. In the Diocese of Hawai‘i, a clergyperson must be in their congregation at least four years before they take a sabbatical. May 2018 will mark the conclusion of my fifth year at All Saints’. I am very excited for the sabbatical opportunity which is scheduled to begin Monday, April 2 nd, 2018. I will return to All Saints’ on August 19 th, 2018. After 16 years in ordained ministry, this will be the first time I take a sabbatical. During my sabbatical, I hope to walk the famed pilgrimage route, The Camino de Santiago. Also, Erin will join me after the Camino for a couple of weeks, so we can travel abroad and on the mainland. I am still finalizing some plans for the last half of my sabbatical.

In anticipation of a smooth transition for my sabbatical leave, The Reverend Mary Tudela has also agreed to cover worship services beginning April 8 th, 2018. By Mary taking on this role, All Saints’ sabbatical expenses will be significantly lower because Mary already resides on Kaua’i. The Vestry, specifically the Senior and Junior Warden with the assistance of Chris Wataya, will be charged with overseeing the daily life of the Church and Preschool. Pastoral care will be covered primarily by a newly formed Lay Pastoral Care Committee.

I am overjoyed to share this wonderful news. May your 2018 be filled with joy, grace, and peace.

Faithfully in Christ,

The Reverend Ryan D. Newman
RECTOR AND HEAD OF SCHOOL

Nomination forms must be submitted no later than Tuesday, January 23 at 8:00PM.
How can we best live out the Summary of the Law from our Holy Scriptures? Please join us for a facilitated Lenten learning series which will explore how we as faithful Christians can best be in relationship with our God and our neighbors.

We’ll begin our study by exploring our personal spiritual autography and assessing our relationship with God. We’ll learn about different spiritual practices and set personal goals. Then we’ll explore our behaviors as they relate to the first four commandments of loving God. Followed by exploring commandments 5-10 loving our neighbors.

Once we have a better understanding as individuals on how to personally improve our behaviors in these areas, we’ll extend our group dialog to the All Saints ‘ohana and then end the series in a group dialog about how to best live this out as global citizens.

THIS WEEK IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
January 21: The Woman at the Well Spreads the Word
John 4. As Jesus was passing through Samaria on the way to Galilee, he stops at a well to rest. There he meets a woman who comes by to draw water from the well. Jesus asks her for water and she, amazed that he, a Jew, has addressed her, a Samaritan and a woman, asks Jesus how he comes to ask her for a drink.

Jesus then talks to her about the water he gives—living water, by which he means himself. At first the woman does not understand, but as the conversation moves on, she comes to see Jesus as the Messiah. Excited, she goes back to her town to tell everyone, who then begin to believe in him.

The Samaritan woman that Jesus meets at the well is the exact opposite of Nicodemus. He is an Israelite; she a despised Samaritan. He has a noble heritage; she has a shameful past. He is a respected teacher of the ruling class, she a common woman with a bad reputation. He is highly educated; she is simple. He comes to Jesus intentionally; she meets him by accident. He has seen signs and knows that Jesus is “from God”; she meets him as a complete stranger. He is skeptical; she is open. He comes in secret; she goes out to evangelize.

But look how the woman opens herself up to Jesus’ words! Each response shows a little more understanding and openness to Jesus. “Sir, give me this water.” “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.” “Come see a man...the Christ!” By stages she opens up to Jesus and his message.

We can look at the woman as a model of a disciple, though she never is counted as one of Jesus’ disciples. In a way, she is the first Christian evangelist and missionary, as she runs back to her town to proclaim Jesus as Messiah.
