New collaboration, upcoming events

The best journalism I've seen has almost always been the result of collaboration - reporters pairing up, reporters, photographers and graphic artists working together and -when all the cylinders really are firing -reporters, visual journalists, line editors and copy editors all coming together to produce journalism that matters. There's strength in numbers.

That's why we're glad at The Press Club of Cleveland to start working more closely with our colleagues at the Cleveland professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists.

We've been talking with Carrie Buchanan, the SPJ president, and Harry Boomer, GCABJ president, about what we can work on together.

Carrie had the first idea. We want to spread the word about journalism that matters, reporting that overwhelms fake news with facts and all the great stories that are being done in our region. There are lots of community groups that want to hear about that - as well as challenge us and ask us questions. We'll now be working with Carrie and Harry to identify those groups, make clear to them that we're ready to tell our story of journalism in greater Cleveland and collaborate among our organizations to get them speakers.

If you're in such a community group or know of one, tell them about us. If they have an interest in hearing and learning more about journalism that matters, we have the journalists ready to talk about it. And if you have ideas about how our three journalism organizations can work together and collaborate more closely, we want to hear them.

The Press Club goes to the movies: March 14

By now, you should have gotten a save the date alert for one of the most exciting new programs we've tried in years. On March 14, we'll have a special "sneak peek" of the Cleveland International Film Festival. It's all been spearheaded by Mark Durbin, manager, Energy Delivery & State Communications at FirstEnergy, and movie buff. Mark came to us courtesy of Press Club board member and FirstEnergy Corporate Communications Director Todd Schneider with the idea. We like people with smart ideas. We love people with smart ideas who want to take a lead role in making the idea an event.

Thanks to Mark and Press Club board members, we'll have a program that includes film festival Executive Director Marcie Goodman and Marketing and Media Director Debby Samples, Cleveland Film Commission CEO Ivan Schwartz, Plain Dealer entertainment reporter Laura DeMarco and possibly others.

If you like movies, writing and reading about movies - go to this! And help us spread the word. Here's how to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sneak-peek-of-the-cleveland-international-film-festival-tickets-42998425448

The Press Club continues its trivial pursuits: March 15
Back by popular demand is Trivia Night. On March 15 at Market Garden Brewery, join us. There will be prizes! Fun! Frivolity! And the opportunity to show everyone how smart you are. Or at least how much otherwise-useless information you've managed to acquire. Go here to get your ticket: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/press-club-trivia-night-march-15-2018-tickets-42875871887
