Volume 08 | February 2018
Reading, Writing and Hunger

Going to school is the norm for over 13 million kids in this country. In coastal South Carolina, one in five children lives in a food insecure home, which means they lack consistent access to enough food for a healthy, active life. Being hungry affects a child’s ability to learn. Food can even be characterized as a basic school supply, similar to textbooks and pencils. Children who go to school hungry often suffer an inability to concentrate and are more likely to fall behind academically. In addition, children who are food insecure are more likely to miss school because of illness, to suffer from depression and anxiety, and are more susceptible to behavioral problems. This vicious cycle often continues beyond graduation because food insecure children are more likely to drop out of school, which leads to lower paying jobs and a greater likelihood of being food insecure adults.

The Lowcountry Food Bank's Kids Café, Summer Meals, BackPack Buddies and School Pantry programs help fight childhood hunger. The children of our community are the future; every effort must be made to ensure it is bright. Please consider being a part of creating a bright future for children in our community.

The Lowcountry Food Bank's programs that help fight childhood hunger in our community

April 7, 2018

The Lowcountry Food Bank is one of fourteen charities chosen as part of the Cooper River Bridge Run's Charity Connection. Now you can participate in a fantastic run while supporting your favorite charity. Register for the race here and choose the Lowcountry Food Bank as your charity of choice.

To help make the run a success, we are looking for volunteer support on race day: Saturday, April 7, 5-9am. Our volunteers will help corral runners at the start of the race, so this is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups. The early start will help us beat the traffic and volunteers will receive a t-shirt! To sign up and for more information, please click HERE .
A BIG thanks to all our partners who helped make Chefs' Feast 2018 a SUCCESS!

 THEME FOR FEBRUARY
CHILDHOOD HUNGER

Spread the Love
Celebrate National Peanut Butter Day with the Lowcountry Food Bank!

Every February, food banks around the country collect jars of peanut butter for those in our community who experience hunger. Peanut butter is a great-tasting, shelf-stable source of protein and is one of our most sought after, nonperishable food items.

"Spread the Love" this February by hosting a peanut butter drive with the Lowcountry Food Bank!

Spreading the Love is easy!

1. Register  your food drive online.

2. Collect jars of peanut butter during the month of February. You can also collect virtual peanut butter through your personalized fund drive page.

3. Spread the word to your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.

4. Drop off your peanut butter at any of our three Lowcountry Food Bank locations - Charleston, Yemassee or Myrtle Beach - on or before February 28.

Thank you for
Spreading the Love!
