Principal's Message
Greetings,
I want to thank everyone for attending our State of the School Presentation  Thursday night. We had a wonderful turnout and I really appreciate your support and presence. I know many others would have like to have been there, but everyone has a busy schedule and can only be in so many places at once. I want to thank everyone who played a part in preparing the presentation and hosting the event. I am so happy to see so many people have a hand in the success of the presentation.

We were overwhelmed by the response in questions  that were submitted leading up to the event. We had 53 questions sent in beforehand. We were able to tackle about half of the questions through our presentation and at the end of the event. I will use the next couple of newsletters to answer a few more questions. Some questions will go on to our standing committees for discussion or our full board. There was a wide array of questions and very thoughtful and relevant questions, so once again, thank you.

Q: Are there plans to bring back the sensory/smart room?
A: Yes, however,  the current sensory/smart room is being used a multi-purpose room, and it will probably continue in that capacity for a year or two. A SMART room, or a room of similar type will be a part of our future facilities and buildings plan, much like any of the other questions of our spaces including competition gym, fine arts facilities, etc.

Q:Will all teachers eventually be using Google Classroom and the weekly recap?
A: A decision hasn't been made yet on the platform or LMS we will be using moving forward, but as a school system, we certainly are aware of the benefits and ease for all if we are unified in using  Google Classroom or similar type.

Q: Can we please require volunteers on a point system?
A: I am not too aware of this type of system, but let's talk! Ultimately, in a school where our "community" feel is important, it is great to have as many hands as possible playing a role in our school. If we can all do something, that relieves the stress of a few doing all.

Q: Any upcoming changes in uniforms?
A: As I mentioned early in the year, we will be forming a parent committee to get the ball rolling on this discussion. My hopes is mid-February for a committee formation.

Q: Is there a plan to upgrade or add to the current playground with all of the kids up there?  How about the surface of the playground?
A: Yes, however it has to be strategic and not a move backwards. Perhaps, phase I could be an upgrade to the current playground surface, with a phase II to be the upgrades/expansion. Another key piece to keep in mind is the early childhood program needs to have their own playground, and could easily be a part of the phase I or phase II plan.

Have a very pleasant weekend and enjoy the warm weather!

The A team consists of: Teigyn Moore, Joe Kollasch, Raiden Gruenzner, Mason Stoffel, Beth Ness, and Emily Coudron. They have also earned a trip to the State Tournament with both this win as well as their 2nd place finish at the Mankato tournament back in November.

Our other 3 teams didn't qualify for the finals round, but still did a great job!

ONE ACT PLAY
On  Monday, January 22 at 7:00, our high school students involved in the one act will be presenting their show, "Babes in Gangland". The show will take place at the Fitzgerald Campus, and is free to attend!

What is a tough Chicago gangster doing under a bed in a cheap motel in the middle of nowhere? What is the mysterious connection between mobster boss Victor Antula and his dreaded rival Sal Monella, "Czar of South Dakota"? Is Lola Bottomy really Victor's moll or an undercover FBI agent? Why is Orlando Lakes tired of the racketeering life and eager to run off with Victor's lovely daughter Julietta? For the answers to these and other trivial but hilarious questions, head for "The Heat Is On" cabin camp, where Mrs. DePoint will make you very comfortable indeed. By the author of longtime favorite The Wild Flowering of Chastity, this melodramatic farce picks up on gangster films and fashions and makes scrambled eggs out of it all. Marked by puns, double entendres, asides to the audience, and other absurdities, this is a comic tour de force.

8th GRADE FIELD TRIP
The 8th grade will attend Diary of Anne Frank at the Park Square Theatre in St. Paul on  Friday, March 16. Please complete the permission slip found here

Juniors:  Registration deadline for the February ACT is Friday, Jan. 12th (rather than Jan. 5th).  In general, each junior who is planning on a 4 year college and hasn't taken the ACT yet should sign up for the February test.

Juniors:  Friday, Jan. 26th will be a good day to either visit colleges or attend the Zap the ACT workshop offered by Community Services as you do not have school that day. You can sign up for the Zap the ACT workshop at www.mankatocer.com

Seniors:  The Dollars for Scholars local website is now open.  Go to http://mankatoarea.dollarsforscholars.org to apply.  They give over 25 local scholarships ranging from $500-$1000.  Anyone who has at least a 2.5 GPA and over 40 hours of community service should apply as it is a lottery once the student has those 2 criteria.  There will also be two $1000 scholarships for Loyola students who attend SCC!!  In addition, there are academic scholarships.  ANY SENIOR WHO IS AT ALL INTERESTED IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY SHOULD APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP.   Important tip concerning the application:  Under "Add an Activity",  choose "volunteer work" or "volunteer church work" (it is listed alphabetically) rather than "community service" or "church/religious" to list your volunteer work.  If you have done it correctly, at the end it will ask you for your grand total # of volunteer hours.  After you put the total in, be sure to hit the "submit app" button.

SENIORS: There are copies of the Kiwanis scholarship application on Mrs. Arians' door by the scholarship newsletters.  This scholarship awards three $2000.00 scholarships!  It is due Jan.15th.  The criteria emphasizes community service and servant leadership. It requires a recommendation so be sure to ask a teacher soon if you need one. We have numerous outstanding candidates for these scholarships!
