Maintaining a Healthy GI Biome for Optimal Health

As I had mentioned in last month's letter, I attended a MAPS conference recently and learned many important tips to keep us all well. Another huge topic there was the importance of maintaining a healthy biome in our bodies, in other words, keeping our friendly bugs in us happy and abundant, as they take up more DNA space than our actual human cells. Some of their essential functions include keeping unfriendly bugs away, positively influencing our immune system, producing short chain fatty acids, reducing overall body inflammation, and positively supporting a healthy weight.

Here are a few helpful suggestions to support your healthy biome:

1. Begin with breastfeeding your babies if possible

2. Keep your sugar, white flour and grain foods to a limited quantity, as this disrupts the good flora and helps yeast grow

3. Consume fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir, and yogurt, which are rich in good flora.

4. Avoid intolerant foods in your diet

5. Consider taking a high count, high quality probiotic. I usually recommend 20-30B CFU of multiple organisms on a daily basis

6. Consider taking a friendly yeast called Saccharomyces Boulardii as this friendly bug plays many positive roles in our body
