Dear  ,

You can help move Needham "Toward Zero Waste" at two upcoming events - the February 27th Selectmen's Hearing on Plastic Bag Use Reduction, and our March 5th forum on Recycling Quality vs Quantity (a follow-up to our standing-room-only November event on food waste reduction).  Please come and add your voice!

We are also very pleased to announce two new features - our Neighbor Spotlight series and our new Volunteer Opportunities page.  Please read on for information on both, as well as the two upcoming meetings.

Board of Selectmen Public Hearing on New Plastic Check-Out Bag Policy - February 27, 2018

Needham's Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Selectmen's Chambers at the Needham Town Hall to gather input about a new plastic check-out bag policy. The board is currently considering a proposal to encourage larger stores to voluntarily eliminate their use of plastic bags for checkout.

Green Needham's Bag Ban Team endorses a mandatory ban, and we urge you to attend the hearing and encourage the Selectmen to adopt this more straight-forward approach.  Read more...

Toward Zero Waste Forum in Needham - Recycling Quality vs Quantity

Please join us on Monday, March 5th at 7pm in the Needham Library's Community Room for a lively discussion about how we can improve the quality of Needham's paper, plastic, glass, metal recycling and organic composting. This session will be more narrowly focused than our November waste overview, and will be action oriented. So please come ready to roll up your sleeves.

We will discuss:
  • What needs to change to ensure that our waste can be recycled rather than rejected and diverted to the trash stream and incineration?
  • Is education enough? Knowing what we can and can't recycle and how to prepare it?
  • Actions we can take to address these challenges.

Neighbor Spotlight: The Trash Game

Green Needham's new Neighbor Spotlight series features people who are making changes in their lives to be a better neighbor to planet Earth.  They are pretty ordinary people doingd extraordinary things.  They are inspiring, and we all need inspiration.  Continuing this month's theme, the latest NeighboSpotlight is about a trash game.  Maureen and Bob's  current record in their trash game is 14 weeks.   That's how long it took them to fill up one small Needham trash bag (15 gallons).  Read more...
Volunteer Opportunities - Get Involved!

People take different paths to getting involved in causes and projects they care about.  Sometimes, hearing about a specific need or task to be accomplished makes it easier to get started and feel like you can make a difference.  Our new Volunteer opportunities page is a way to do just that.  The two upcoming events we've highlighted in this newsletter came about through the efforts of a team of Green Needham volunteers.  What could you help make happen in the months to come?

Sincerely,

Michael Greis
