In November, Burlingame's voters approved Measure I, a retail transactions and use tax of ¼ percent, which effectively increases the sales tax rate in Burlingame from 8.75 percent to 9 percent. 

In addition to requiring a separate external audit of the collections and expenditures of the new transactions tax, the Measure also provides for the establishment of a Citizens' Oversight Committee appointed by the City Council to review and report on the receipt of revenue and expenditure of funds from the Measure I tax. Members of the Committee shall be residents of the City or representatives of Burlingame businesses. 

The Oversight Committee shall annually review the auditors' findings regarding the revenues and expenditures and transmit a statement regarding that review to the City Council. In addition, the Oversight Committee shall provide oversight of any bonds that are backed in whole or in part by the Measure I revenues. 

The City is seeking to fill five seats on the Measure I Citizens' Oversight Committee. The application deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018.  Click here for the application.

Online registration for California's    Earthquake Bolt + Brace program  opens on Tuesday, January 23 and will only be open for 30 days. This program provides up to $3,000 toward a seismic retrofit for qualifying homes. These grants go fast.  Sign up to receive updates here. 

Youth Teen Recreation Services (YTRS) is pleased to offer scholarship awards to current high school juniors and seniors in an effort to provide financial assistance for those who have made positive contributions to their communities and/or the parks and recreation profession.

San Mateo County offers numerous locations for motor oil recycling. If you change your own oil, collect it in a clean container with a screw-on cap (like a rinsed-out gallon milk container); place the oil filter in a sealed plastic bag; and drop off at a collection center. The nearest centers to Burlingame are in Millbrae or San Mateo. Also, most vehicles now recommend oil changes every 5,000-10,000 miles instead of the old standard of 3,000 miles. Central County Fire Department leaders will share what they learned on the scene of the recent wildfires and explain what you can do to help prevent wildfires at a free program called "Lessons from the Wildfires".

 

This program is sponsored by the Town of Hillsborough, the City of Burlingame, and the Burlingame and Hillsborough Neighborhood Networks. It will feature Fire Chief John Kammeyer, Deputy Fire Chief Drew Flinders and Deputy Fire Marshal Christine Reed, who will discuss our local wildfire management, measures you can take to protect your home, emergency communication channels, the evacuation process and essential items to include in an emergency "go bag" that you can grab as you leave. They also will answer questions from the audience.

Seniors (age 55+) are invited to our Valentine's Dance.  We will have a DJ, dance lessons, snacks, and refreshments.  This is a free event, but please RSVP to 650-558-7300.  Thank you to our Burlingame Youth Advisory Committee for hosting this event.  We look forward to celebrating this enchanting holiday with you!
