This Week's Featured Event
Boston Massacre Commemoration
March 3rd

See history come to life at the Old State House (206 Washington St.) for a full day of activities that culminates in hundreds reenacting the Boston Massacre on Saturday, March 3rd.


From 1 to 4 pm, enjoy Talk of the Town inside the Old State House (included with Old State House Museum admission), and learn about  Boston's colonial past and meet citizens who lived through the contentious period of the military occupation.

At 1:30 and 3:30 pm, kids ages 5-12 can enjoy History Hunters, which includes unique and personal stories to learn about the past and use historians' tools to help colonists and soldiers discover the truth. Space is limited. Please sign up with museum staff as early as 9:30 am. This is included with Old State House Museum admission.

At 6 pm, before the action unfolds, watch Downtown Boston transform into its colonial past as the citizens of the city gather outside the Old State House. Hear from patriots, loyalists and moderates who lived through the events that sparked the Revolution.

At 7 pm is the reenactment of the Boston MassacreWitness the violent and tumultuous incident on King Street, performed by living historians.

ArtsEmerson Hosting 'A Conversation with Claudia Rankine' on March 4th 

ArtsEmerson and The American Repertory Theater are hosting a conversation with acclaimed author, poet and MacArthur Fellow Claudia Rankine on Sunday, March 4th. The discussion will be moderated by Rankine's collaborator P. Carl. 


Rankine will discuss her New York Times best-selling book of poetry, "Citizen: An American Lyric," and her new play, "The White Card," being performed at the Paramount Center through April 1st. This event is free, but RSVPing is needed by clicking here. This event is at 5:30 pm.
'Waitress' at Boston Opera House Through March 4th

The national tour of the Broadway musical "Waitress" is at the Boston Opera House through March 4th. 


"'Waitress' tells the story of Jenna -- a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life," according to bostonbroadway.com.

ArtsEmerson Presents Bedlam's 'Hamlet' and 'Saint Joan' in Repertory at 
Cutler Majestic Theatre Opening 
March 7th

ArtsEmerson is presenting New York's Bedlam theater company for "Hamlet" and "Saint Joan" in repertory at the Cutler Majestic Theatre starting March 7th. 


The two productions feature four actors performing 49 characters for two stripped-down stagings. Both are directed by Bedlam founder Eric Tucker. 


The productions run for three weeks from March 7th through March 25th. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.

Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party on March 13th Benefits The Genesis Foundation for Children

The Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party is an exclusive cocktail party among the beautiful garden displays and exhibits of the Boston Flower & Garden Show before it opens to the public.  All proceeds from the preview party on Tuesday, March 13th will benefit The Genesis Foundation for Children (60 Temple Place).


There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, raffles and surprise live musical entertainment from the Mix Lounge. Past entertainers included Haley Reinhart, Matt Nathanson, Nick Fradiani and The Plain White T's. ArtsEmerson is presenting "The White Card" at the Paramount Center through April 1st.


This is a new play by Claudia Rankine that explores "the state of our racial imagination" with a performance set at a dinner party.

Griffin Museum of Photography Exhibit 
'Tree Talk' at Lafayette City Center

The latest Griffin Museum of Photography exhibit at the Lafayette City Center Passageway is "Tree Talk." 
Karen Klinedinst's "The Red Tree"

"In this exhibition called 'Tree Talk' the Griffin Museum of Photography brings together 66 photographers who converse with trees. The exhibit has been organized to flow as a narrative from the beginning to the end of the passageway. In this way the trees all talk to each other. We hope our audience enjoys the exhibition and that all of the trees give up their secrets to you," said Paula Tognarelli, executive director and curator of Griffin Museum of Photography.
Roger Archibald's, "Barber Chair Sequence (2)"

This exhibit is through a partnership by the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Abbey Group and the Downtown Boston BID. This exhibit is in the Lafayette City Center Passageway (between Macy's and the Hyatt Regency Boston) and open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibit is running from Jan. 30th through May 30th.  
'Triumphs and Laments' at 
Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery

Internationally acclaimed South Africa-based artist William Kentridge's "Triumphs and Laments" is at the Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery (25 Avery St.) through April 14th. 


"Triumphs and Laments" was originally produced as a 550-meter long frieze along the banks of the Tiber River in Rome. The gallery show includes the complete set of aquatint etchings and woodcuts relating to the frieze, two long maquettes that diagram its first processional, a set of monumental stencils, and a video highlighting the opening performance in Rome.

"In this work, Kentridge presents figures from a broad sweep of Italian history in a grand procession to represent the progress and follies of human endeavors. In this work, the artist has brought this theme to contemporary relevance with his images of the migrant boat people," said Joseph Ketner II, director of Emerson Urban Arts.


The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 2 to 7 pm

Restaurateurs Hold First Meetup, 
Discuss Everything From Soup to Nuts 
(Fish and BBQ, Too)

Numerous Downtown Boston restaurateurs gathered at Shed's BBQ for a BID-sponsored meetup to discuss the restaurant industry on Feb. 21st. 


"It was so great meeting with our DTX neighbors to discuss how we can collaborate on future events together!" said Beth Stipanov, co-owner of Barracuda Tavern and Barracuda on the Fly. "We all want our customers to have an amazing experience while visiting our neighborhood and together we can make things better!" 

"I found it to be a refreshing conversation, with candid remarks, as the downtown restaurant community brainstormed marketing ideas that would promote all of our establishments. We will all be stronger and more successful by working together," said Brad Fredericks, owner of Fajitas & 'Ritas and Back Deck.

Washington Street McDonald's Reopening with New Design, Wait Staff

The newly renovated McDonald's (329 Washington St.) is a new breed of Mickey D's. When it reopens this Wednesday (Feb. 28th), it will be offering table service and self-ordering kiosks. 


"It's a new design, a new concept," said franchisee Vern Chin. "There will be table service for people to deliver food to your table and it doesn't cost extra."

Chin said a staff member will greet customers as they enter the restaurant to let them know where to order. Customers also have the option of ordering at the counter. After ordering, food will be brought to your table. 
 
Hyatt Regency Boston Hosts Washington PostLive Discussion About Addiction in America with Governor, Mayor 

Elected officials including Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Martin Walsh, medical experts and advocates on the front lines fighting the opioid addiction gathered at the Hyatt Regency Boston on Feb. 22nd. The discussion was part of the Washington Post Live's "Addiction in America" series.

"Pain is a very complicated issue and it's not clear to me that you can think about it in a broad stroke," said Governor Baker.

"In Boston, we're using all the tools we have to make sure those with substance use disorders have a continuum of care that allows for long-term, lasting recovery," said Mayor Walsh.

Chinese New Year Celebrated in 
Chinatown with Lion Dancing and More 

The Chinese New Year was celebrated the Year of the Dog this past weekend in Chinatown with lion dancing and other cultural performances.


Chinatown Main Street hosted a Cultural Village in the China Trade Center that included dancing and events for kids, including story time, origami folding and more.

The Boston Planning & Development Agency and MCAF Winthrop LLC are hosting an open house public meeting regarding the 115 Winthrop Square tower project on Monday, March 5th at 33 Arch St. (29th Floor). This meeting is from 6 to 8 pm.


BPDA staff and development team members of MCAF Winthrop LLC will be available at topic specific stations. 

The 115 Winthrop Square project proposes a mixed-use project with approximately 1.592 million sq. ft. containing residential, office, retail, restaurant, parking and other commercial uses, as well as a Great Hall space.
