Winter's not over yet: Drive carefully
Washington County travelers have been enjoying a relatively mild winter up until this week. What's more, forecasters are saying it's possible winter weather conditions may continue in the coming days and weeks.
Road crews will be applying anti-icing material, sanding and plowing as appropriate to keep Washington County roads safe. Travelers need to take steps to maintain safety as well. Follow these tips:
  1. If possible, stay home.
  2. Let someone know of any travel plans, and check in upon arrival. Remember, using a cell phone while driving is against the law.
  3. Keep the gas tank at least half full. If traffic is already at a standstill, don't be "that vehicle" that runs out of gas, creating both a hazard and additional delays.
  4. In snow zones, use/carry traction devices when required. Washington County has three snow zones on 175th Avenue, Barnes Road and Cornell Road.
  5. Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle.
  6. Slow down. Be safe.
  7. Increase following distance. Tailgating on the road is never a good idea. It's especially dangerous in winter weather.
  8. Signal early and brake gently. Slamming on the brakes often induces sliding. In icy conditions, "pump" the brakes to facilitate stopping.
  9. Respect road closures. Roads are closed for traveler safety.
  10. Watch out for snow plows and sanders. Passing on the right of a plow can damage vehicles that hit the blade of the plow. Stay at least three car lengths behind.
