Good News--Bad News in the Arctic

As promised in my last BSB nine days ago, I will try to include more good news and/or "hope" in all of my future postings.

First, the good news.  Despite record low levels of sea ice for this time of year, the world's leading scientific authority on the Arctic Ocean maintains that there is still hope.

I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with him on February 8 at a conference on Long Island, where he delivered two lectures about abrupt climate change and how it is being aided by record low levels of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic.

He spoke at length about the unprecedented problems that the world will face if we don't take URGENT action soon regarding climate change.

I love the way Dr. Wadhams smiles and chuckles during his lectures; even though he's talking about some of the scariest information the world has ever
heard. Check out this short Sep '17 interview Near the end, he talks about the "death spiral" in the Arctic.

As for climate change, he has concluded that cutting back on fossil fuel consumption will no longer solve the problem. He feels we must quickly develop and install processes for rapidly taking more CO2 out of our atmosphere each year than we are putting up there.

Now for the bad news. Take a look at the most recent graphs that describe the world's sea ice problems as of today. Then scroll down to find out what you can do to help.

These first two graphs show that we have now hit the lowest area of Arctic Sea Ice ever recorded in January.

This last graph (below) shows GLOBAL sea ice extent (by month) since 1978. The last data point is in the bottom left corner. It looks like we hit the tipping point about two years ago.

What can you do? Five things:

1. Raise hell with the news media that doesn't keep the world informed about this kind of information that is so critical to our future on planet Earth.

2. Raise hell with any elected official you know about the same thing.

3. Further educate yourself by reading Dr. Wadhams' book and by visiting the  Arctic News website , where he and many others post critical information that otherwise would not be available to the public. It's where I got the three graphs posted above.

4. Help fight climate change by influencing friends, family and co-workers to stop eating foods made from animals. That deadly habit is the world's leading driver of climate change.

5. Share this information with everyone you know.

In closing. If you want to make me happy on this, my birthday, then read and heed all of this critical info that I have shared with you today.

My most recent public presentation was at the SW Florida VegFest on January 28, 2018 (Click below for slides)

Food. Health. Planet. Our Future as a Species.

*****************

Looking for Opportunities to Speak in 2018. Since 2016, my research, writing and speaking has been focused on the sustainability of our ecosystem, our civilization and our future as a species. With an emphasis on food choices, I call it the "most important topic in the history of humanity."

After all, what could possibly be more important to humans than the survival of our species?

Upcoming Talks: In April at the vsh.org in Honolulu and Maui. In May at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
