"The Beach Against the Increase" Senate Resolution
Hello, Long Beach State!
We hope you are all having a great spring semester!
Last week, our ASI Senate passed a resolution against the potential tuition increase, and we hope to get more of our students involved in this fight! The CSU Board of Trustees has a proposition to raise CSU system wide tuition for a second time. This increase is expected to be approximately 4% (or $228 per student for undergraduate instate tuition).
The reason behind this potential increase is a lack of funding for higher education in the Governor's budget. Governor Brown anticipates to only give $102 million for the entire CSU system, which is $170 million less than requested to run the system. Student leaders across the CSU are joining efforts to lobby the at the State Capitol this March. Leaders have also been working on an awareness campaigns to bring students into the fight. This is an issue that impacts all of us.

IN THE SENATE

Last
Wednesday, the board approved the
third
and final reading
for "The Beach Against the Increase" resolution
. They included a request that the CSU Board of Trustees make last year's tuition
increase report available to the public prior to the vote in May. The report will disclose where the additional funds from tuition were used.
ASI Chief Academic Officer Jordan Doering came to speak to the Senate and reported that there will be a revamping of the general education policy over the next year. He also reported on the commencement changes, town halls and road shows in the event of a tuition increase, and the possibility of implementing a mental health rapid response team on campus.
President Jane Conoley addressed the Senate and assured that she is against the
tuition
increase
. She encouraged the board to focus their efforts in preventing a tuition increase on the State Legislature and Governor Brown, as
those
are the most likely avenues to make a long-lasting impact.

LOBBY CORPS

Carlos Valenzuela, Associate Justice of ASI's Judicial Branch, addressed t
he Lobby Corps (LC)
on the possibility of visiting other CSU campuses to promote LBSU's efforts in fighting the tuition increase and to gain more support. He
also
discussed
working with LC on classroom visits to spread awareness of the potential increase
.
LC will be collaborating with 22 West Magazine on a Beach Against the Increase column to share students' thoughts and objections to the tuition
increase
. These stories will then be shared with state legislators.

PRESIDENT'S CABINET
Mondays - 10 a.m. (USU-234)
On Monday this week, the President's cabinet discussed events for Earth Week and Black History Month. They also discussed planning for
the Black
Graduation ceremony, as well as the
Lavender Graduation ceremony for the LGBTIQ+ community.
Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Affairs Sean Aquino held the first LGBTIQ+ Coalition Meeting last Friday,
in which they established their goals and mission statement.
The president's cabinet is still in need of a commissioner for veterans affairs. This position will stay open until filled. Apply on BeachSync or visit asicsulb.org/gov for job descriptions and other open positions.
