Woman Up Project has begun a yearlong effort to tell the stories of women in Chicago business and to elevate their voices and be a catalyst for change. A
s a part of the project, Crain's asked nine Chicago business leaders to give a big-picture view of how they'd improve the city and its business environment. The following TCN members were featured in the project's launch issue:

 RENETTA MCCANN ON AGENCY DIVERSITY
USAA, the financial services provider focused on members of the military and their families, has successfully encouraged greater diversity in agency staffing through its partnership with Publicis Groupe.
Renetta McCann, Chief Talent Officer at Leo Burnett, a Publicis Groupe agency, highlighted this topic during the Association of National Advertisers' Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference.
Renetta also
discussed how the team assembled to service USAA's business had significantly surpassed the minimum target of 30% of staff coming from diverse communities.
"What we've been able to achieve through our first three quarters [of the USAA partnership] is 71% of all new hires have come from those diverse communities,"
said Renetta McCann.

MATTER RECRUITS FEMALE BOARD MEMBERS
MATTER - in partnership with Horizon Pharma, Takeda, the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA), and Northwestern University - is proud to launch 3.8, an initiative designed to help place female business leaders on the boards of fast-growing healthcare startup companies.
3.8 helps place senior, female healthcare executives as independent board members of MATTER startup companies. The initiative, named for International Women's Day, seeks to increase diversity in the healthcare innovation community and explore solutions to the challenges women face when seeking leadership positions. DIANE SWONK NAMED CHIEF ECONOMIST OF GRANT THORNTON
Diane Swonk has been named Chief Economist of Grant Thornton. Based in the firm's Chicago headquarters, Diane will enhance client services with her economic forecasting acumen and significant experience advising U.S. policy makers, central banks, multinational corporations and C-suite teams.

HADLEY INSTITUTE PLANS TO EXPAND
The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired (
Julie Tye) will expand its building in Winnetka, IL to include
a 2,600-square-foot second story addition as well as an expansion of its walkway from the sidewalk to the entry to accommodate a guide dog or person to walk beside someone who is visually impaired.
"This project began as a need to renovate the building to make it more safe and to take care of mechanical systems that are extremely dated. How can Hadley reconfigure itself so we are really meeting the needs of our 21st Century learners?" said Julie Tye.

DONNA CARROLL NAMED THE 2017 VILLAGER OF THE YEAR
Donna Carroll, President of Dominican University, has been named the 2017 Villager of the Year by the local newspaper, the Wednesday Journal. Each year, the newspaper selects one person from the Village of River Forest who has done something extraordinary during the course of the year. Donna was selected primarily for the regional and national recognition she has received for her support of Dominican's undocumented students and for her advocacy of comprehensive immigration reform-but the paper also commended her for her 24 years of solidleadership. The university last year celebrated the 20th anniversary of its name changed from Rosary College, a process that Donna oversaw. Read more...
