Message from your President Elect
|
|
Dear Shir Chadash Community
As your President Elect, I want to wish each of you a very happy new year and to tell you how delighted I am to be serving you.
I just wanted to take a moment to remind you of the important events occurring this weekend. On Saturday afternoon from 4-6 pm, Rabbi Silver is hosting a Meet and Greet at her home so you can informally meet the incoming board. I hope you can join us for some food and drink and camaraderie. On Sunday morning, events begin at 9:15 am with Minyan followed by the Annual Pancake Breakfast.
The Congregational Meeting will then begin at 10 am. We will be officially voting on the proposed slate of board members, I will give an overview of the state of the shul, and we will
bid Lisa Finkelstein and the outgoing board adieu. That will be followed by the Community Envisioning Exercise, which will start at 10:30 am and will end by noon. We will be splitting into groups for discussion, with the intention of creating a set of Best Principles for Shir Chadash. These principles will then inform much of the work we will be doing in the coming year. We want to be sure we have as many Shir Chadash voices as possible in the conversation so I do hope you can join us.
See you this weekend!
Julie Finger

Women in the Bible Series
|
|
JCC Uptown, New Orleans, January 2018
Ronna Burger
Dept. of Philosophy and Sizeler Professor of Jewish Studies, Tulane University
Thursday, January 11, 7:30 pm: The Book of Genesis
How does the first woman provide a model for the women in the later family drama of Genesis? How does Rebekah, in particular, display her natural cleverness and boldness in dealing with the conventions of the subordination of a wife to her husband and the birthright of the firstborn?
Thursday, January 18, 7:30 pm: The Book of Ruth
How does the situation Ruth faces echo the story of Tamar and Judah (the ancestors of Boaz) in Genesis 38? What is the role of Naomi and of Ruth in the plan to find favor in the eyes of Boaz?
Thursday, January 25, 7:30 pm: The Book of Esther
What motivates Esther to accept the dangerous role of saving her people through her relation to the Persian King? What is the clever and bold plan she adopts to accomplish that end?
Thanks to Rabbi Deborah Silver of Shir Chadash for arranging this series

When Do I Sit, When Do I Stand?
A JCC Course at Shir Chadash with Rabbi Silver
January 10, 2018 7:30 pm
The Orchard - Four Ways to Pray
It can often be a challenge to pray from a fixed liturgy, particularly when that liturgy is lengthy, complex and hard to infuse with our own spirituality even in translation. We will use a centuries-old system of interpretation, originally invented by the Rabbis to study Torah, to open up some possibilities of how we might re-energize our communal prayers.
