Park in the parking garage located at 703 Main Street (main hospital entrance). Vouchers for free parking will be distributed to conference registrants at the event.

Perinatal and neonatal nurses, nurse educators and Advanced Practice Nurses working in inpatient or outpatient settings.

About the Event

Learning Outcome                                                            After attending this continuing education activity the learner will be able to provide improved perinatal care, emotional support and health education to drug dependent women and comprehensive inpatient care to newborns at risk for, or diagnosed with, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

Objectives                                                                         - Describe key factors that predispose women to drug use and drug abuse.
 - Explain the physical process of the chronic brain disease of addiction.
 - Identify factors that contribute to health professionals' attitudes toward
   women who abuse drugs during pregnancy.
 - Identify strategies that will improve communication between health care
   professionals and women who abuse drugs during pregnancy.
 - Describe the effects of drug-use during pregnancy on fetal/neonatal
   outcomes.
 - Explain how to manage pain during the intrapartum and postpartum
   periods in women receiving opioid replacement therapy.
 - Describe the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome scoring tools and the
   importance of being reliable in using these tools.
 - Describe the item definitions for the signs of Neonatal Abstinence 
   Syndrome assessed using the Finnegan Scoring Tool.
 - Describe the goals of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic
   management of infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
 - Describe challenges associated with caring for infants with Neonatal
   Abstinence Syndrome.
 - Describe how to promote breastfeeding among opioid dependent
   women.
