Registration for the 2018 Congress
 of the Humanities and Social Sciences is now open. Register by March 31 to take advantage of our early bird rates. Congress 2018 will run from May 26 to June 1 at the University of Regina. This year's  program will include Congress favourites such as Big Thinking lectures, Career Corner and  Expo as well as Regina programming. Watch the #SeeYouInRegina video

Congress travel awards
To help graduate students attend Congress 2018, the University of Regina is providing 600 student awards totaling $270,000. The funding includes a subsidy for on-campus accommodations, a meal card for on-campus meals, and a credit to the campus bookstore - all to help make it easier for students to experience Canada's largest gathering of scholars. Applications now open, closing February 28.
Big Thinking on the Hill - Feb 8
Join us on Parliament Hill on February 8 for the first  Big Thinking  event of 2018, featuring  Susan Aaronson , Research Professor of International Affairs & GWU Cross-Disciplinary Fellow, George Washington University, and Patrick Leblond, Associate Director and Associate Professor, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa. They will give a talk entitled " Trade and human rights: What is Canada's role?

Federation gets ready for budget day
The next federal budget is expected this spring, and the Federation is looking forward to providing the HSS community with analysis and insight into this important document. If you haven't already done so, check out the Federation's 2018  pre-budget submission  and watch for our budget reaction after it is tabled .

Have your say on  Budget 2018
Here's a chance to tell government about the value of research. The federal government has launched four surveys to gather input from Canadians that will inform the 2018 Budget. This is an opportunity to express your thoughts on a range of issues, including funding for research. Share your ideas at #YourBudget2018 here.



2018 Federation elections
The nomination period for the 2018 Federation Board of Directors elections will begin later this month. General Assembly representatives will be notified by email, and others can expect to see more details in next month's Communiqué newsletter.

Every month, the Bookmark it! Blog looks at landmark works that deal with culture, society and research in Canada. In her book entitled  Responding to Human Trafficking: Dispossession, Colonial Violence, and Resistance among Indigenous and Racialized Women, Julie Kaye invites a conversation about the possibilities and the harms of anti-violence strategies in a context of settler colonialism and its ongoing, daily lived expressions of violence.

Carleton receives cybercartographic funding 
Carleton University's Research Professor and Director of the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre, Fraser Taylor, has received $44K in funding from the Commission for Environmental Cooperation for environmentally responsible economic development work, and involves cooperation between Canada and Mexico. Saint Mary's University President and Vice-Chancellor Robert Summerby-Murray has been named the Chair Designate of the Canadian Bureau for International Education's (CBIE) Board of Directors. CBIE is a global leader in international education, dedicated to equity, quality, inclusiveness and partnership. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has launched its annual #SSHRCStorytellers challenge. Open to all post-secondary students, this contest asks students to show Canadians how humanities and social sciences research is positively affecting our lives, our world and our future. Submissions are being accepted until January 31. See full contest details here.
Imagine a Canada
Imagine a Canada , a national arts and leadership program of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) is inviting young people, kindergarten to post-secondary, to share their thoughts on what the future of Canada will look like through the lens of Reconciliation. More information on getting involved and submitting your entries are available here .
CIFAR call for ideas
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research is calling for proposals for sustained research projects that address "complex, fundamental questions of importance to the world." Ambitious project ideas from all research disciplines are welcome. The call for letters of intent opened on November 15 and closes on January 21. Read the full details here
