Moderation vs Deprivation

All of us probably struggle during the holiday season to stay away from all of the delicious food and libations. We might feel that we either have to stay away from all temptations or suffer the dreaded weight gain that's almost predictable. I have found that taking a more realistic approach allows you to enjoy some tasty treats and also maintain your healthy weight. Try setting aside a special day each week that you'll plan to have a small portion of your favorite foods, and in between stick to a healthy selection of fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean meats, eggs, and limited grains of all kinds. Get used to not eating something sweet most days, as this feeds into more sugar cravings and over indulgence. Because alcohol has a high calorie and sugar content, also try and get used to setting aside a special day a week to have a reasonable glass of your favorite beverage while picking a designated driver or calling Uber for a safe ride home. Lastly, you might want to do what I did when I realized earlier this year that I put on 7 pounds without hardly changing my routine (well, I have to admit, I did consume more dark chocolate than usual). I started using my Fit Bit, logging in all of my food and fluid calories, and doing my best to get in at least 8,000 steps each day. This simple method allowed me to lose 8 pounds and keep it off. Fit Bit is a great gift for yourself or anyone else you know who could use a bit of accountability.

Have a wonderful, restful, and memorable holiday season!
