My War On Cancer
Part 6 - Nutrient Insufficiencies that Impact Mitochondrial Function

Happy Holidays to everyone!

This month we will continue discussing the potential contributing factors that can increase cancer development. As mentioned in a prior newsletter, the cells have millions of mitochondria responsible for generating energy for normal cellular function. Mitochondria rely on adequate nutrients and a healthy cellular environment to work optimally and make the most molecules of energy. Some of the essential nutrients include Alpha Lipoic Acid, Coenzyme Q 10, and L-Carnitine, which can all be found in a consistently healthy diet, but often people benefit from taking these in supplements to better support mitochondrial function. Athletes have noticed a significant improvement in performance when taking these supplements before and during exercise, as less lactic acid accumulates in the cell and therefore allows faster recovery.

When mitochondria don't have adequate nutrients and/or adequate oxygen delivery to the cells, it has to rely on making energy inefficiently, which causes lactic acid accumulation. This unhealthy change in cellular environment helps promote cellular damage and allow these damaged cells to avoid being programmed for cell death, which over time can lead to uncontrolled cell growth.

To best protect mitochondrial function, I recommend the following healthy changes:

1. Eat a very healthy diet, consisting primarily of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts (not including peanuts), seeds, eggs, fish, turkey, olive oil, avocado, and non-gluten whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice. A good example is a Mediterranean diet.

2. Perform regular, almost daily activity and exercise, including aerobic and resistance forms of activity. Examples include walking, jogging, biking, hiking, swimming, yoga, pilates, spin class, and weight training.

3. Maintain a balanced life, managing stress on a regular basis. Stress increases oxidative damage to the cells and can therefore damage mitochondrial function. Incorporate relaxing and enjoyable activities in your regular schedule, and always take time to laugh, laughter greatly enhances your immune function as well.

4. Consider taking mitochondrial-supporting supplements, such as Alpha Lipoic Acid, Coenzyme Q10, and L-Carnitine. Make sure you choose a high quality, bioavailable brand and proper dosing. A Genova Nutreval panel can help patients determine what dose of these nutrients, as well as other essential nutrients, a person needs.

Specialty testing and

insurance billing

Insurance companies are making it more challenging for doctors to bill for specialty labs. They question any testing done outside of conventional medicine, and often label testing as not medically indicated, or experimental, and will deny coverage even though benefits indicate they should cover the cost. For this reason, effective April 1, 2014, we will no longer bill insurance for specialty lab testing. We will recommend ways to allow insurance to help cover the cost based on a patient's benefit plan, or we can offer a more affordable cash price. Please contact our office for more information.
