Imagine taking a U.S. government class with a current city manager who is a Harvard-trained lawyer and has nearly 20 years
of government experience, or enrolling in a criminal justice course with the chief of police of one of the busiest cities in the country.
Last fall, 29 Miami Beach Senior High students had the opportunity to take college-level courses with Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales and Police Chief Daniel J. Oates.  The courses, taught at the high school, were part of FIU's dual enrollment program, which gives students across Miami-Dade County the opportunity to take FIU classes at no cost to them, jumpstarting their college career.

"Students afforded this opportunity really get to experience what college classes will be like," said Maria T. Rodriguez, principal at Miami Beach Senior High. "They are able to save money ... while learning the independence and expectations of the course load from the safety of their home school."

Morales and Oates - both current adjunct professors at FIU's Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs - incorporated their areas of study and their real-life experiences into their courses.

"The City of Miami Beach places a strong emphasis on delivering the highest level of education to our students throughout our public school feeder pattern," Morales said. "I've tapped into my years of experience in both politics and government to provide the students real-life context to the material studied."

Since the Spring 2015 semester, the City of Miami Beach has funded 20 unique FIU dual enrollment courses at Miami Beach Senior High School and 671 students have participated in 29 class sections. This past year, the Miami Beach Commission voted to increase funding to classes, meaning that FIU will be able to provide more dual enrollment choices than ever before.

New 3D Printers

Thanks to a donation to the school in memory of Rudra Bhatt (the MBSH student that died in a street accident the summer of 2016), we have purchased two new 3-D printers and computers to use with them. These will be used by many clubs around the school, including projects for the Engineering Club and the Art Department.

LIFE ON CAMPUS

The Beach High PTSA participated in the 8th Annual Team Run for Education.      On Saturday, January 27, students and their families lined up on the starting line near the Children's Museum and raced the 5K down the MacArthur Causeway to Nikki Beach in Miami Beach, in an effort to raise money for all the Miami Beach area schools. Special thank you to all the families that joined us starting at 5:30 am to represent and support Miami Beach Senior High and to our sponsors (see photo below).

Our Thespian Troupe 0391 won a Critics Choice at District One Acts and will be taking our piece to States. Unfortunately, this great honor comes at a high cost as we are now unable to pay to put on a musical. So many of our thespians look forward to the musical every year, and it would be a huge disappointment if we didn't have the funds to put it on.

This past October, we competed at the District 8 Thespian Competition with a play entitled Dark Road. Our play was awarded Best Technical Crew, Best Supporting Dramatic Actress, and a Superior Rating. In addition to these awards, our play was chosen as a Critics Choice, which means that out of 24 plays that competed, ours was chosen as the best one, along with 3 other plays. Because of this, we got the opportunity to perform at the Florida Thespians State Festival in Tampa in March.

Sending a play to states is extremely expensive, especially for 27 students and many of our thespians cannot afford it, so the department must pay for them. Therefore, after the State competition, we will have no funds left in our department to put on our end-of-year musical. We would really appreciate it if you could donate whatever you can. Thank you in advance for your donation and your generosity.

ADVOCACY

Legislative session 2018

The House has been pushing through HB 7055, which is a train bill similar to HB 7069. This legislation is steamrolling several bills into one, each of which should be heard on its own merit.

HB 311 and HB 427 are two good pieces of legislation that have yet to be heard in committee. This new legislation, respectively, provides alternative pathways to a standard high school diploma and will eliminate unneeded testing by allowing school districts to set teacher salary schedules removing the merit pay requirement currently in law.

The Florida PTA urges you to call your House Representative and urge them to support or co-sponsor HB 311 and HB 427.
