Susan Murphy
Brings a Wealth of Experience
to Community Foundation Board
As Susan Murphy approached retirement as Cornell's vice president for student and academic services three years ago, she began thinking about how she could give back to the community she first visited as a high school senior applying to college in the spring of 1969.
While she was already a member of the board of Kendal at Ithaca, Murphy was interested in volunteering with Community Foundation because of its focus on issues that affect residents throughout Tompkins County. So when Alan Mathios, former dean of Cornell's College of Human Ecology and a Community Foundation board member, asked her to join the board in 2015, she readily accepted.
"One of the things I liked about the Community Foundation is the opportunity to learn about the community at large and to then try and help the arts, education, human services and the environment," she said. "I think that was a major attraction."

Ithaca Couple Creates
Environmental Education Fund
Gerry and Caroline Cox have taken the adage,
"Think globally, act locally,"
and put those words into practice by creating an environmental education fund at Community Foundation of Tompkins County.
The Coxes, who live in Ithaca, want the fund to support any organization that educates the public about
ecological issues in the entire Cayuga Lake watershed. "This topic is not covered well in our educational system, but it's important to us," said Gerry, a former assistant dean at the Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences. "Our concern is with the
long-term health of this region's ecosystem and its inhabitants." ... story continues

Leadership and Service
Community Foundation carries out several grant cycles. We
engage community members
on review teams to read and review the various applications and to make recommendations to our board for funding. Applications only tell
part of the story about the needs in our community.
Our review teams get a more thorough idea of needs and the services carried out to meet those needs when our teams are
diverse and inclusive
of people who have utilized local services themselves or live alongside those who do.
Community Foundation, and Margo Hittleman, Co-founder and Coordinator, Natural Leaders Initiative (NLI), started talking about how to

"everyday leaders" and emerging leaders.

$10,000 Challenge for Cornell Employees
"Cornell values and appreciates their employees involvement in this community, and here is another way to be connected. Thanks to a Cornell professor emeritus and spouse, funds will match gifts from Cornell faculty, staff and retirees who are new donors to the Foundation in 2018!"

Each new donor helps grow the Foundation's impact in Tompkins County and helps realize $10,000 operating support.
2018 Challenge parameters:
* Anonymous donors will match one-for-one up to $1,000 gifts made in 2018 by new donors who are current or former Cornell employees (faculty or staff).
* The maximum matching amount is $10,000.
