Promoting Massage Therapy Through Education and Professionalism

A Letter from Your President
This year marks my 20th anniversary as a Licensed Massage Therapist and a proud member of the NH Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association. When I take a moment to reflect on all the opportunities there are to grow in our profession and the benefits my annual dues have presented to me, it brings a smile to my face.  Being an active member has enabled me to meet so many therapists statewide, nationwide and worldwide via membership meetings, continuing education, MT Fusion events, and Regional and National Conventions. The ability to grow personally and professionally is limitless when you become involved!

More than ten years ago I began volunteering by being part of the Phone Tree group headed by Jan Wheeler. My commitment was only about 20 minutes 2-3 times a year and I was able to talk with other members throughout NH. I was hooked! So stepping into the Membership Chair position was only natural for me. I traveled to schools with massage therapy programs in NH and shared how great it is to be a member of The AMTA. That segued into holding 2 Board Member positions, and ultimately serving as President.

Over the past two years we had a theme during each chapter leadership meeting. Some of the themes were "Appreciation", "Resourcefulness", "Boundaries", and "Fun". The theme of our last meeting on November 15, 2017 was "Pride". I shared that I was proud to be a leader within our membership, to give back to my profession and to strive to make a difference. It was so rewarding to hear each of the 9 members around the table share what makes them feel proud about being a member of AMTA-NH.

For years, each President, in our own creative way, has made pleas for volunteers. Our chapter's "Benefits of Chapter Involvement" document is available for you to read in the "Call for Candidates" section of this newsletter. Our National office emailed all members on January 18 citing the "Top AMTA Member Benefits of 2017". In lieu of figuring out another way to say we need your help, I encourage you to read Lisa Angione's story about how becoming involved parlayed into a fabulous opportunity.

Your fellow chapter members would love to hear your "story". I encourage you all to share your member experience in a future newsletter.

Education Chair

Hello. I am Lisa Angione. I am the new Education Committee Chair, and have been an AMTA member for five years. I have also served as the Scholarship and Membership Chairs for the past two years.

I would like to share how being a part of the AMTA-NH Chapter Leadership Team has helped evolve my personal and professional growth in the Massage Therapy Profession.

In November of 2016, I attended the AMTA-VT Chapter Education Workshop "Myofascial Scar Release for Burn Scars".  Our instructor, Kate Peck, had invited several burn survivors to our workshop so that we could practice our new skills hands-on. I was excited to hear from these survivors that massage therapy has assisted greatly with their healing process.

Chapter Delegate

The 2017 House of Delegates (HOD) meeting kicked off as scheduled at 1pm on Wednesday, September 13th.  The meeting began with a brief welcome, pledge of allegiance and the HOD report by Jessica Ferrer. This was followed by a roll call and a very helpful tutorial on voting and the voting equipment to be used.  The meeting intro also included the approval of the HOD agenda, review of procedure rules and a mock recommendation prior to hearing and voting on the actual position statement and recommendation we were there to debate and vote on.

NH License Renewal Change
To date, 2018, there are no Senate or House Bills that have been introduced that impact our massage licensing or scope of practice. There has been confusion as to when our licenses must be renewed. Make sure you pay attention to the dates on your license renewal certificate. You will get a notice from the Office of Licensure and Certification (OLC) at least 60 days before your renewal is due. If you have moved since your last renewal it is your responsibility to notify the OLC of your address change.

Human Trafficking Update
Massage therapy has increased in popularity as well as respect, evident in increased research and evidence-based practices. Unfortunately, history repeats itself as regulators continue to deal with prostitution and human trafficking. The massage profession continues to be abused by "shady characters" looking to exploit women and those less fortunate.
