A Note From Pastor Bill
We're at a familiar place in the church year, the first Sunday in Lent. And so we hear from Scripture about the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. Right after our Lord's Baptism Mark tells us, "The Spirit immediately drove Jesus into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness for forty days being tempted by the Satan. And He was with wild animals, and the angels were ministering to Him."
Scripture leaves much for us to think about. Why would the Holy Spirit drive Jesus into this wilderness? How many temptations were there over the forty days? Did the wild animals try to hurt Him? What did the angels do to minister to Him?
So with all these questions did we forget Jesus was just baptized? Mark with his immediacies wants us to connect Jesus with fallen humanity. Mark wants us to see Jesus embodied, from the very beginning of the Gospel, Jesus Christ the Son of God is in our story. Jesus is living in the same world we live in. Jesus is totally identifying with what it means to be one of us, "bone of our bones and flesh of our flesh." He is fully experiencing the rhythm of our human existence through baptism and temptation ...continue reading

LENTEN SERMON SERIES
"CROSSWORDS"
This Lenten season we will focus our attention on Jesus' words spoken while He was suffering on the cross.  We will call this CROSSWORDS.  When someone is dying we pay close attention to the final words they speak.  These words convey important messages for us to contemplate.  Our midweek services allow us time to prepare for the central acts of our salvation - the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate during Holy Week.  Come and join in the fellowship of a light supper at 5:30, participate in the hymn sing that begins at 6:40, and the service that starts at 7 p.m.  There will also be a service at 11:00 a.m.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Sunday School Notes for week of February 18
Paul and Silas in Prison - Acts 16:16-40
We look at the incarceration of Paul and Silas the focus of Sunday School today. Just as God freed Paul and Silas from prison, granting them life out of death, so Christ by His crucifixion and resurrection frees me from the prison of my sins and grants me life eternal. Questions for discussion include "How is this event more than just a story about Paul's escape from prison?" and "How has God rescued us from the prison of sin?""
Memory Verse: [God] desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:4

5th/6th Grade Early Communion for Students and Parents

What is LITURGY anyway??
Practicing Authentic Worship
Liturgy is a pattern or structure for our worship- our total response as God's people to our loving God. Liturgy is a means of enriching our worship; it is not established by Scripture, but it has developed and changed since the earliest days of the church. Many part of the liturgy have been in use for thousands of years. The sung liturgy with which we are most familiar includes the Lord Have Mercy (Kyrie), the Hymn of Praise (Gloria), the Responses between readings, the Alleluia, the Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) and the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei).
At Timothy, the pastors and organists meet about every 6 weeks to go over the readings for the next several Sundays, talking about themes (according to which pastor will be preaching) and appropriate hymns for each Sunday. We want to make every Sunday a meaningful worship experience for everyone. That's a lofty goal and we may fall short, but we are making the effort! One part of our liturgy planning involves choosing a sung liturgy. Timothy usually stays with the same liturgy for 6-8 weeks; for example, we will use one liturgy for Advent, one for Christmas and Epiphany, another for Ordinary Time, one for Lent, and so on.
Most Lutherans are probably most familiar with the liturgies in the Lutheran Service Book-with the catchy names of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5! At Timothy we also use Marty Haugen's "Tree of Life" liturgy, Dan Schutte's "Mass of God's Promise," Matt Maher's "Mass of St. Timothy," and James Miller's "Jazz Liturgy." Sometimes, we use a Kyrie from one composer, a Sanctus and Lamb of God from another, depending on the style of music for a particular Sunday. At times, a part of the liturgy is included in one of the hymns of the day, but we usually keep all parts of the liturgy in one form or another. You can be sure that the organists and pastors know when there has been a total "fail" in choice. It happens-but so do wonderful, glorious liturgical celebrations!
Beginning with the 2nd Sunday in Lent, we will be using three hymns for our liturgy: # 944 for the Kyrie or Lord Have Mercy, #950 (vs, 1, 2) for the Sanctus and #434 (vs. 1,3) for the Lamb of God. We will also use a response between readings composed by David Maxwell entitled, "All Our Hope," and Christopher Walker's "Laudate, Laudate Dominum," in place of the Alleluia verse as Alleluia is not sung during the season of Lent.
