Friday Night Hypnosis in Roxbury to Help Kids with Cancer
Roxbury High School students can stay home Friday night, flop on the couch and fall asleep with the TV on. Or they can pay a few bucks, be "put to sleep" and do weird stuff while sitting in front of a couple hundred fellow students in a gymnasium.  The latter might not sound like the better choice, but there's an upside: Doing so will help kids with cancer.

For the third time,  Staten Island, N.Y. "speed hypnotist" John Cerbone will be performing in Roxbury to help Roxbury High School students raise money for the Four Diamonds Mini-THON to benefit children with pediatric cancer. The performance, sponsored by the Roxbury High School Interact Club, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Eisenhower Middle School gymnasium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets will be $7 at the door or $5 in advance, said Roxbury Rotary Club member Steve Alford, noting that people wanting to be placed on the advanced sales list need to email him at  alfordfamily5@optonline.net There will be snacks and beverages for sale and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to The Roxbury High School Mini-THON Club. The club is sponsoring the upcoming Mini-THON event which raises money to help fight pediatric cancer in conjunction with Penn State University's Thon weekend. Kennedy School Celebrates 100 Days with 100 Items Collection
It is hard to believe this year is already more than half over but Kennedy School celebrated the 100-day milestone by giving back to the community.  Its Early Act Club decided to hold a toiletries drive for Roxbury Social Services. According to the club advisors, Tina Banta and Rebecca Peppel, "The students brainstormed ideas around the 100th day of school and since we donate food items to the food pantry in the fall, they wanted to donate the other items that are in need at the food pantry."

Early Act was informed by a parent that Roxbury Social Services was in high need of toilet paper but their website also explained that they needed items other than food as well.  The club generated buzz about the collection by sending home flyers and by making student-generated posters to advertise the challenge.

Each grade collected a particular group of items. The Preschool and Kindergarten were tasked with collecting toilet paper, Q-tips, and cotton balls while the first grade collected toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash. Second grade had shampoo and conditioner with third grade covering the hairbrushes and hair bands. Fourth graders collected bars of soap, body wash, and deodorant. Roxbury Basketball Updates
Mendham (35) at Roxbury (33) - Girls Basketball - February 8th
Playing without its leading scorer, Mendham was able to turn it on in the game on the way to an impressive comeback win over Roxbury.  With junior Joey Meyers, who is just 24 away from 1000 career points, sidelined with an injury, Nikki Surella scored six points in the fourth quarter to give Mendham a 35-33 road victory.  Surella finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while fellow senior Jessica Hall added 15 points, six rebounds and six steals for Mendham.  Mendham switched from its usual 1-3-1 zone to an aggressive man-to-man defense, to start the second half, and it swung the momentum completely in its favor.  "We just created a lot of turnovers," said Gnapp of his team's frequent second-half full-court presses and half-court traps. "Our pressure in the second half was really good." That pressure led to several clutch points off turnovers for Mendham, which outscored Roxbury 14-6 in the fourth quarter.  Cassidy Miller scored a team-high 11 points while Sarah Olivero chipped in 10 for Roxbury, which led by seven at the half. Chatham (38) at Roxbury (25) - Girls Basketball - February 12th
Veronica Kelly put up 14 points for Chatham in its 38-25 win over Roxbury in Succasunna.  Chatham outscored Roxbury 31-16 in the second half after trailing by two points through the first two quarters.  Cassidy Miller led Roxbury with 10 points. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.

North Hunterdon (66) at Roxbury (48) - Boys Basketball - February 13th
Michael DelSantro put up 14 points and added three steals to help lead North Hunterdon to a 66-48 win over Roxbury in Roxbury.  Wes Reinagel collected 12 points in the win, while Paul Woolhouse and Nick Guasta recorded 10 apiece and combined for 13 rebounds. North Hunterdon came out strong and built a 23-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The team would add to it from there over the final three quarters, outscoring Roxbury 43-37 the rest of the way. With Big Games Coming to Roxbury, USA Fistball Offers Coach Lessons
Being that Roxbury is going to be the  host town for the 2018 U18 World Fistball Championships this summer, the organizers are hoping more young people give the obscure sport a try.  Toward that end, the United States Fistball Association is offering seminars to local coaches, athletic directors and educators.  The seminars will take place July 13 and July 14 during the big tournament.

The championship games are scheduled to happen July 11 through July 15 at Horseshoe Lake park in Succasunna. U18 men's and women's national fistball teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Italy, New Zealand and India will compete in the international tournament.  The seminars will begin, on July 13, with a 9 a.m. to noon session on "basic practical training measures." At 2 p.m. participants will go to the fields to watch the games being played, said the USFA. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.
