"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new right spirit in me." Psalm 51:10
Message from the Principal
“Last summer, Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter – an Indianan who was installed as head of the archdiocese last October – ordered that all Catholic schools in St. Louis admit Negroes.”
- The New York Times, September 27, 1947

Cardinal Ritter High School, since its inception, has valued diversity. Its namesake, Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter ( former Archbishop of Indianapolis and St. Louis), was instrumental in ensuring that all Catholics had access to a high quality private education, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or religious background. To this day, diversity serves as a core value and holds a place in the Cardinal Ritter High School mission statement.

As we celebrate Black History Month, I am proud to be a part of a community that not only respects all individuals, but is rooted in the value of diversity. Let us continue to serve as a model for others as we understand that we are all God’s children.

God Bless,

Mr. Pelych
Lenten Reflection
What are you giving up for Lent this year? As a native of Colombia and a cradle Catholic
from a very devoted family, this was a question I had never heard until I came to the United States. Since living here, I have started to adopt this practice during Lent - giving up
something. Giving up chocolate, ice cream and soda have all been good practices, but my most fruitful Lent was the year I decided to give up complaining. At the time I was a senior in college living with five other girls and half of them were incredibly messy. The apartment was not very big, so the mess was everywhere. I complained to whoever would listen, until Lent came around and that year instead of giving up fro-yo from the cafeteria, I decided to give up complaining about my living situation. It was much more difficult than I thought it would, but that Lent I learned to see my roommates through a different lens. After those weeks, my roommates stopped being the messy girls I was living with and became the girls who were writing a thesis, applying for grad school, discerning a vocation. It was during this time that I learned to love them better; I was still frustrated about the mess, but I could now see them as more than just that.

This year I have been praying and reflecting about giving up something for Lent. I don’t have messy roommates anymore, what can I do? In my prayer, the question has kept coming, why is it important to give up something this lent?

As the poet Rilke writes, “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue.” Many times I still feel this Lenten question is unresolved in my heart. In my prayer I have come to realize that when we give up something we are dying to ourselves.

Saying “no” to myself, denying myself, is the dying of the self. This helps me realize that it not just about me and what I want - I am not the center of my own life. The dying of the self that happens, when I consciously say no helps me realize there is more than just what I desire. Denying myself not only builds virtue, but it also reminds me of the profound need I have for Christ.

This Lent I want to invite you to pray and reflect - what are you giving up for Lent? As Rilke continues to say “Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live into the answer.”
