Dear Delone Catholic Families,
In light of the recent tragedy of the school shootings in Florida, I thought it would be helpful to communicate with you regarding the safety measures that we have in place at our school. As a parent myself, I become as genuinely concerned as you do when incidents such as these occur.
Please note that entrance to our school building is restricted throughout the school day, with access only available through the main entrance via a buzzer system monitored by the office. We have surveillance cameras monitoring some of the major public areas. We also maintain active communication with the McSherrystown Police Department, whose chief has already visited the school in the past week to review our safety procedures. At the beginning of the school year, we performed a safety walk-through to determine where upgrades were warranted. Our faculty is versed in emergency procedures for various occurrences, such as weather or intruder, and we plan to enact emergency drills with greater frequency to sharpen their skills and the reactions of our students. A very successful lockdown drill was conducted on Wednesday afternoon. Furthermore, I invite you as parents to share any concerns you may have with me at any time. Additionally, I encourage you to have open communication with your children about such events to lessen their own anxieties. I have attached a few talking points (available by clicking here) from the National Association of School Psychologists to assist you with this conversation.
As I stressed to our staff at our faculty meeting this week, I believe that the greatest deterrence to such threats is to be vigilant, to report any concerns, and to develop strong relationships with our students so that they embrace the school environment as a safe place to be and to learn daily. I impressed upon them that this approach must stem from the reality of our shared dignity as sons and daughters of God. We, as educators, must respect the inherent dignity of our students and vice-versa through all our interactions with one another.
I hope that in sharing this information with you, you will feel confident in the belief that our school is a safe place for your children. Lastly, I invite you to pray along with the whole school community for those tragically affected by this recent event, to pray for our own community and for our nation that such indiscriminate acts of violence come to an end once and for all.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us.
May God bless you always and in all ways!
Sincerely,
Richard V. La Rocca
Principal

Inclement Weather Reminders
|
For closures and delays: Delone Catholic parents are notified via One-Call of school closures and delays. This information, along with early dismissals, is posted on the
school web site, Facebook and
Twitter as soon as possible. You may also call the school at 717-637-5969 and the recording will notify you of a delay or closure. WGAL is notified immediately upon the decision to delay or close. In addition to the WGAL T.V. channel, closures and delays are posted on the
WGAL website .
For early dismissals: Early dismissals are posted immediately on the
website,
Facebook, and
Twitter as we receive the calls from each school district. WGAL also posts school district dismissals on their
website.
Remember: Phone calls from parents will not be accepted for dismissal requests. The phone lines are needed to receive information from the school districts. We also encourage students to call parents from the office to inform them of the different drop off schedule for bus transportation so that an adult may be available for the transport from the bus stop to home.
Please be alert to those weather forecasts for incoming snow possibilities. If you wish your student to be dismissed at a different time, you must send in a note with your student for each dismissal. No emails and no phone calls will be accepted. Notes must be turned in before homeroom, on the day they are to be applied. You may not submit one note for the duration of the school year. A note must be delivered on each separate occasion.
For Maryland families who utilize the bus service, please refer to the chart below regarding different inclement weather closings and delays.
Our Inclement Weather Policy is available on our web site or by
