PAWS Celebrates 13 Years
PAWS for People
celebrated its 13th anniversary this past Sunday, February 11th. Over the past year, PAWS has continued to grow - with a focus on expanding to Kent and Sussex counties, DE and southern Chester County, PA. In order to reach more members, we have held trainings in all four states. Now, with over 500 therapy teams who visit over 160 locations, we are touching the lives of more people in our ever growing community.
Help us celebrate this special anniversary by sharing a picture of your pet or a story about how pet therapy has impacted you! Send your picture and/or story to registration@PAWSforPeople.org or post to our Facebook page.

Bringing Joy
My first experience with PAWS for People was while I was visiting a friend in the ICU at Christiana Hospital. When I saw the magic of the PAWS visit, I knew that my goldendoodle Kate would be perfect for pet therapy. Since then she has not proved me wrong.
Kate brings smiles to everyone she encounters. She is especially wonderful reading with children. In October, we started reading at Star Hill Elementary and it has been such an amazing experience. I've watched several kids who were completely afraid of dogs and sat on the opposite side of the blanket with me in the middle slowly inch their way closer to Kate to read her a story. They now all give her a pet and I am no longer sitting in the middle!
I love what we do with PAWS. I can't wait to see what 2018 brings for us, especially now that Riley is also certified. Pet therapy brings joy to whoever we are visiting, but not nearly as much joy as it brings me.

2018 Hero Dog Awards - Nominations Extended to 2/14
Is your dog a hero?
The Hero Dog Awards are an annual competition that honors heroes on both ends of the leash: whether your dog is a courageous service dog, saves lives as a law enforcement dog, or just loves to greet you with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day, we want to hear your story. Submit a nomination for your dog in one of the seven categories (including therapy dog) and they could be featured on the Hallmark Channel next fall!
This year, PAWS for People is an official charity partner!

Welcome, PAWS Office Assistant, Sue
Balascio!
Sue joined PAWS in January 2018. She brings over 15 years of experience with academic and arts-related nonprofits. She has also served on the boards of several local nonprofit organizations. As a true lover of beagles, Sue is excited to be working in an organization that is passionate about animals and the amazing therapy work they provide to our community. When not working at PAWS, she can be found in her weaving studio with her dog Shiloh (pictured with Sue) and cat Stella. She also enjoys spending time with her husband Bill and sons Jacob and Stefan.
Welcome, Sue!

The Rewards of Helping Others
"Research-and anecdotal evidence-demonstrate that volunteering helps the volunteer, too.
P
eople who volunteer their time say they get as much out of their work as the people, or in some cases, the animals, they serve."
Read the entire article, including an interview with PAWS member, Denise Lopes, who speaks about her volunteer work with her therapy companion, Roger.

Sundance "Sunny" Robinson
As one of Lynne Robinson's therapy companions, Sunny visited with many people and generated many smiles. While by Lynne's side, this particularly handsome Golden Retriever touched the lives of everyone he met at Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Brader Elementary School, Aquila of Delaware, Rockford Center, Union Hospital, Christiana Care, and numerous Community Events. He also provided visits for PAWS by Special Request. Sunny was a PAWS office dog and welcomed all visitors to the PAWS office. We wish Sunny a happy retirement with plenty of treats and belly rubs. Thank you, Lynne, for sharing Sundance with all of us and the community!
