Grade 8 Play
The eighth grade students performed in their last play at DCD. This was a bittersweet moment for the actors, many of whom have acted in ten class plays. Ms. Webster congratulated the stellar actors for their teamwork and dedication to the DCD theatre program.
Exercising Thoughtful Citizenship
Dedham Country Day fifth grader Edna Etienne-Dupie experienced first-hand what it means to sit at the top of the Massachusetts judicial system. On Thursday, February 8, Edna spent the day with the Chief Justices of Massachusetts.

This special invitation was the result of a chain of events that took place earlier this fall around Mayor Marty Walsh's bid for re-election and his subsequent victory rally.
When Edna stepped up to the microphone at one of his neighborhood rallies, the Mayor was so taken with her eloquence and sense of purpose as a young person, that he invited her to speak at his anticipated victory rally.

After her speech at the victory rally, Edna met the Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Maura Doyle, who subsequently invited her to sit with all the Justices, offering her an opportunity to hear and discuss a current case before them. ... Read more

Calling all new(er) DCD families!
For those of you who were unable to make the first strategic planning discussion, we are pleased to announce a second session for new families on Wednesday, February 21, at 7:45 a.m. (coffee and refreshments followed by a discussion) in the Adams Lab.

This gathering will provide background information on the strategic planning process and give you the chance to offer thoughts on DCD's strengths and areas for improvement as the school examines its strategic priorities for the next five years. It is geared towards parents who have joined DCD since 2015-2016 (when the strategic planning process started), who weren't able to take part in earlier opportunities to offer input. Please contact Kylie Lacerda if you are able to participate.

Join Our Drive to Help Kids!
DCD has teamed up with Cradles to Crayons to provide low-income and homeless kids the clothing and other items they need to thrive.  Bring your donations of new and gently used clothing, toys, and books to the Cradles to Crayons "pod" in the upper parking lot at DCD at any time through Friday, March 2, and join our drive to make a difference in kids' lives.

Donations will be screened, sorted, and packed up by both current and past DCD families and alumni in the Rand Gym from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on  Saturday, March 3. Please save the date for a morning of volunteering with the whole family. Click here to sign up!

Caldecott 2018
The American Library Association (ALA) announced their annual awards given to honor children's and young adults' books this week. The Caldecott Award is presented "to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." This year, the committee chose more multicultural titles than were celebrated in past years.

This year's Caldecott Award was presented to Wolf in the Snow (Macmillan), illustrated and written by Matthew Cordell. The only writing in this nearly wordless book is of animal sounds. The illustrations are inked in pen and colored with watercolors. The design of the pages varies with some being circular and others depicting more than one picture. A young girl is walking home from school when it begins to snow. She finds a wolf pup who has become separated from his pack....
