Welcome to the Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania ROC. The ROC houses several key components of Goodwill’s retail operation. The retail distribution center, e-commerce department, outlet store, and Mission Logistics are all operated under the ROC’s roof. Each one of these departments has a major role in the success of the Goodwill retail system.
The North Versailles outlet store was developed in order to sell post-retail store material at a discounted rate. Merchandise is rotated out every 30 minutes in the outlet store to move the volume of material received on a daily basis through the system. Once this material has been given a chance to sell at the outlet it is then sorted and packaged into one of 13 categories to be sold or recycled as salvage.
The distribution center is responsible for fulfilling the needs of 34 retail stores, multiple salvage buyers, Goodwill programs, and various other Goodwill properties. On a typical day 250,000 pounds of material moves through the distribution center. The distribution team manages the back stock of raw merchandise, supplies, and the distribution of these materials. The team is also responsible for coordinating and negotiating the sale of salvage commodities on the open market.
Goodwill’s e-commerce department maximizes the value of the donations received by providing an online avenue to sell collectibles, jewelry, designer items, and other high-value pieces. The e-commerce department sells goods on Shopgoodwill.com, Ebay, Amazon, and other major sites. The e-commerce department has been a key factor to growing the business over the past several years as online shopping continues to trend upward.
Mission Logistics is Goodwill of SWPA’s most recent business venture. The two main goals of Mission Logistics are to provide world class transport to our internal stakeholders while at the same time utilizing excess truck and trailer capacity to provide the same world class service to external clients. In turning the excess capacity of the truck fleet into a service that will generate revenue, the ML group is able to contribute to the overall mission of the agency.
In 2017 the ROC contributed to keeping over 16,000,000 pounds of material out of the local waste stream which doesn’t include the weight of goods sold through our outlet store. Each department at the ROC plays an integral role in the overall success of Goodwill.
