NASW Responds to Florida School Shooting
Photo Credit: Greg Lovett / The Palm Beach Post

At NASW-NJ, we mourn the loss of life and extend our condolences to the community of Parkland, FL which is reeling from the mass shooting on Wednesday.

As social workers, we must take action, not only to end this type of violence, but to ensure that survivors and their families receive the care and support they need to help heal from this tragedy.

Read the statement on the shooting from NASW-FL.

Read NASW's Social Justice Brief: Gun Violence in the American Culture.

Read an article from the New York Times about addressing gun violence from a public health perspective.

And please join with us in working for an end to gun violence.
February is Black History Month

Ronald Johnson will be retiring this year after more than three decades as an advocate for the HIV community

As the AIDS United chief policy staff member, Johnson has helped establish the organization's leadership role on many HIV-related issues, including federal funding for domestic HIV/AIDS programs, the Ryan White Program, and the successful lifting of the HIV travel and immigration ban.

Thanks to the work of Johnson and other advocates, much progress has been made in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, African-Americans still represent a disproportionate number of persons living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reports on the work still to be done.

Let's Talk About Opposition in Adolescence
(2 Clinical CEUs)
Thurs, February 22 from 6:30-8:30pm

Opposition in adolescence has become synonymous with oppositional defiant disorder. This view of opposition as a disorder is limiting and puts adults in conflict with youth. This workshop will focus on discussing the need to see opposition on a continuum.

Participants will identify and discuss their personal constructs about oppositionality in adolescence. They will explore Dr. Hubbard's construct of opposition as advocacy and power expression in adolescence, which facilitates the youth's development of a healthy sense of self and purpose.

House Approves HR 620 Despite Efforts of Disability Advocates

NASW recently sent an action alert to members asking them to oppose HR 620, the slyly named "ADA Education and Reform Act." HR 620 attempts to gut the ADA by preventing people with disabilities from seeking immediate legal recourse to protect their rights. Learn the myths and truths about HR 620.

Former Congressmen Tony Coelho, an original sponsor of the ADA, has penned an Op Ed suggesting Congress address the weaknesses of ADA without taking away the rights of millions of Americans.

The House of Representatives voted yesterday to pass HR 620. At this time there is no Senate companion bill. NASW will keep you updated on next steps in opposing this legislation.
