I am a painter. I hope to continue to grow as a painter and share my journey, process, works, and a few words along the way. Feel free to be a constructive part of it.
Rachel Jones works in oils, watercolors, and acrylics. Selective realism and various layering techniques are often utilized to create narrative portraiture. Continuous honing of her skills and experimenting is a daily activity.
Though lone females are often depicted in her work, a universal experience resonates. The images are often quiet and mysterious as the subjects fluctuate between distancing and inviting the viewers into the space. Jones says, "My aim is not to tell a story from beginning to end, but to have observers immerse themselves in a moment." She often focuses on the non-traditional beauty that the French describe as 'jolie-laide'. "I like the fact that despite less than perfect features there is beauty. I'm drawn to the quirky, the odd, the not so perfect. The imperfections individualizes us."
Though some have described her work as leaning towards dark, Rachel insist that there is positivity as the depictions of such moments are past tense. Characters resurfacing show they have moved on to not only another canvas but new experiences. Everyone has sullen moments, but it doesn't define the person anymore than it defines the artists that captured that moment. Jones is currently working on a new body of work for a future solo show.
