2018 NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE CAMP

The Californial Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to announce applications are open for the 2018 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) for high-achieving, science-oriented students.  

Operated by the National Youth Science Foundation, the NYSC is a residential science education honors program for two graduating high school students from each state.  The NYSC is offered at no cost to participants.  All educational and recreational programming as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passagge on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge to the delegates.  

The NYSC is held in the Monogahela National Forest near Barstow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia.  Delegates arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, and depart on Saturday, July 21, 2018.  More informationis available on the NYSC website at  https://nysf.smapply.io/.

The completed application and supporting materials must be submitted online at  https://nysf.smapply.io/. by Wednesday, February 28, 2018 by 6pm EST.  

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant:
  • Must be a candidate for high school graduation between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.
  • Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences.
  • Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in school and community activities. 
  • Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits.
  • Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics.

INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION

The International Leadership Foundation, Los Angeles Chapter, will be hosting a half-day leadership workshop and luncheon on March 24, 2018 for Asian Pacific American students between the ages of 15-20 in Alhambra.  The luncheon will feature a keynote speech by  Jeffrey Kung (Kong Ling Qi).   Jeffrey is a descendant of Confucius, and an award winning singer/songwriter in Greater China.  Past speakers for this event have included Howard Kazanjian (Film Producer: Raiders of Lost Ark Return of the Jedi ), Peter Guber (CEO Mandalay Entertainment; Owner of Dodgers, Golden State Warriors and LAFC), Bill Rancic (Entertainer/Entrepreneur), Janet Evans (Olympics Gold Medalist) and Mitch Lowe (CEO Netflix/Redbox).  All expenses for the selected students are paid for (please indicate Linda Sun as sponsor on the form). CSF SPRING MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The CSF Spring Semester Membership Drive opens February 15 and runs through Friday, February 23rd.   Applications are available in the Library, Room 316 or on the school website:  https://pvhs.pvpusd.net/apps/pages/academics-clubs-csf

Spring semester membership is based on students' fall semester grades.  All details are provided on the application.   A student may qualify for CSF by meeting the membership requirements, applying during the Membership Drive and paying the membership dues ($15). Membership is not automatic; you must apply each fall and spring semester. 

Turn in completed applications and $15 check/cash to the Library or 316 by Friday, February 23rd.  No late applications will be accepted.

On Wednesday, 2/1, the PVHS Surt team faced South High in a morning competition in Hermosa Beach. PV won with a nice margin beating South 95-53. Top surfers for PV were Will Allen, Briggs Peus, Savannah Scriven, and Rodney Buck.

PEF Senior Scholarship Program 2018
Peninsula Education Foundation will again award two $1,500 scholarships to students in the graduation class of 2017 who are continuing their education at the post-secondary level. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and maintained enrollment for two years prior to graduation.
 
Attached is the information sheet with details on the program and how to apply. Students from Rancho del Mar, Palos Verdes and Peninsula High Schools are encouraged to apply. The deadline is March 1, 2018.

Congratulations to PVIT's newest team, the VEX Robotics team, for winning Tournament Champion at last weekend's Corona meet. These dedicated teams of freshman work 4-7 days per week on perfecting and testing their robot to play this year's VEX game, In the Zone .  Winning this trophy qualifies our team to compete in the State Championship in Bakersfield at the beginning of March. Congratulations to (L-R, front-back): Cole Welcher, Dominic Bidondo-Yore, Karl Velazquez, Aaron Guo, Noah Lin, and Rodrigo Boixo.

ATTENTION PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Attention Seniors Applying to College: It is time to order Mid-Year transcripts. Mid year transcripts include your first semester senior year grades. Many colleges require these to be sent for admission. We recommend you look at your applicant portal or on the college website to determine if you need to send a mid-year transcript.  You can pick up the mid-year transcript instructions and order form at the front of the counseling office starting Monday January 8th.  If you have any questions please see your counselor.

WELLNESS CENTER DONATIONS

During lunch students have the ability to drop into the Wellness Center to take a break, rest and be restored. We are currently looking for donations to provide students with some snacks and beverages to add to their experience. The following items would be greatly appreciated!

Fruit, water, Keurig tea pods, essential oils, adult coloring books, sketch pads, puzzles and any other items that might add to the student wellness experience.

OUTSIDE OPPORTUNITIES:
 
Student Pollworker Program :   The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk would like to encourage students of 16 years of age or older to volunteer as a student pollworker for the upcoming June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election (please note that June 5 is the first day of Finals).  Students are expected to be present at the polling place from 6 a.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m. For the convenience of both students and parents, students are assigned to a precinct in close proximity to their home or school. All students who are placed are required to attend a two-hour training session prior to Election Day. In addition to gaining an invaluable learning experience about the democratic process, students receive $100 for serving on Election Day and an additional $40 bonus for attending a training class.
Any high school student that meets the following requirements may apply:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident AND 16 years of age
  • Must be attending a public/private secondary institution
  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or greater
  • Must have teacher and parental consent.
In order to be considered for this program, students must complete the Student Pollworker Application which will be available in the College and Career Center beginning on Monday, February 12.  All applications must be returned to Mrs. Hoffman in the College and Career Center no later than Thursday, March 1.  Please note that the program will ONLY accept 17 students from PVHS.
 
The Eve and Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program   is a great summer opportunity best described as a medical mentor program. Students work under the supervision of a health care educator shadowing various medical professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, lab technician and/or physician) who together provide a range of patient care and services. The program accepts applications from high school students who are current 11th and 12th graders AND born ON or BEFORE 4/1/2002.  The 2018 program has 2, 3, and 4 week programs available in July/August. There is no fee to participate.   Applications may be downloaded from http://www.lapedsoc.org/summer .  Once on the website, click on 2018 Summer Application at the top of the page or Summer Program located in the box on the left.  All applications must be postmarked by February 21, 2018.
 
U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps   is a military youth program for young men and women:  Navy Sea Cadet Corp (Ages 14-17) and the Navy League Cadet Corp (Ages 11-13).   It is sponsored by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Marine Corps.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in Aviation, Field and Medical Training, Leadership Development, Military Police Science, Scuba Diving, Sailing and Photo-Journalism.  Cadets train aboard U.S. Navy and Coast Guard Vessels and can meet Sea Cadets from around the world in their International Exchange Program.  Information on the program can be accessed at www.bevhillsnavyleague.org, then click on the Sea Cadet tab.  For more details, please contact LTJG Doug Irvine, USNSCC at (310) 977-5183 or [email protected].

We are at the peak of scholarship season...especially for community-based opportunities!   NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY.    A complete list of scholarships is listed on Naviance.  To access information on these scholarships, please log onto NAVIANCE.  Click on the COLLEGES tab and then scroll down to SCHOLARSHIPS and MONEY.  Click on SCHOLARSHIP LIST.  At this point, select the scholarship of interest.  In many cases, you will be directed to a website for the application.  In other instances, you may be able to download the application directly from NAVIANCE.
