Helping to highlight the labour shortages in the skilled trades in Hamilton
One of Workforce Planning Hamilton's projects for 2017-18 is Under Pressure: Skilled Trades in Hamilton which researches the skilled trades in the Industrial, Construction, and Motive power trades to discover the hiring and other challenges facing local employers.
On February 9th a consultation was held with representatives from companies such as ACS Valves, Liftow, and Canada Bread and organizations such as Mohawk College, IBEW, Local 105 and the HWCDSB, HWDSB, and others.
Below are some of the project's findings, which includes an analysis of 2016 Census data, consultations with twenty employers, four associations, trade unions, service providers, and select labour market stakeholders.
Among 25-64 year olds, a University certificate, diploma or degree at the Bachelor level or above represents the largest share of people
The "Over 55 years" category has increased for all trade sectors from 2011-2016
Stigma still exists in the trades: negative attitudes towards skilled trades continues
Employers stated that soft skills were a problem among apprentices (ie. work ethic, punctuality, communication skills)
