Last year, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the GLBT Alumni Association during a weekend of festivities that included reaching $1 million in cash and pledges in our groundbreaking scholarship campaign.
This year, we celebrate the start of our third decade with a new name, a new look, and new faces at a new venue. We hope you will join the 10th annual celebration weekend - and first as the newly renamed LGBTQ+ Alumni Association - for our alumni reception and silent auction at the DeVault Alumni Center from 4-6 p. m. on Saturday, January 27. Meet old friends and make new ones in a festive atmosphere on the beautiful Bloomington campus!

Sue Aquila |
Suzanne "Sue" Kathryn Aquila has always believed in putting herself out there. "Visibility matters," according to Sue, because "people need to know the person next to them in church, the person they buy bagels from, the person down the street, is gay." As a business owner, champion of equality, and tireless supporter of numerous town and university organizations, she has led the way in volunteer and service work benefitting countless lives and making the world a better place. Sue graduated from IU Bloomington in 1992 with a Sports Management degree from the former School of Health, Physical Education & Recreation (now the School of Public Health). After graduation, she stayed in Bloomington, raised a family, and started a highly successful local business - Bloomington Bagel Company - that has become an iconic part of the Bloomington landscape and a popular destination for generations of IU students. Sue is an accomplished triathlete whose boundless energy is reflected in all that she does. She has contributed significant time and service as a volunteer member of various boards and commissions for the City of Bloomington, most recently serving as president of Bloomington's Board of Zoning Appeals. Both personally and through her business, Sue has been a significant financial supporter of the IU and Bloomington communities, having made donations and sponsored events, activities, and operations for more than 70 charities; schools; non-profit organizations; scholarship programs; student and alumni organizations; theater, art, and sports programs; museums; business associations; government agencies and programs; and other philanthropic efforts in the Monroe County and IU communities. Her generosity and philanthropy are well known. Her IU Alumni Association "senior schmear" for IU seniors has been a big hit, and numerous other programs have received generous donations through her business. Throughout her career, Sue has been a steadfast supporter of the LGBTQ community. She has rallied the local business community to oppose anti-LGBTQ legislation in our state. Since arriving in Bloomington as a young graduate student, Sue has supported IU's LGBTQ+ Cultural Center by providing meeting space for countless queer groups and allies, and hiring students who needed money to pay for their college expenses. Sue has exhibited exemplary support of the Center and its mission. IU and Bloomington continue to feel and benefit from Sue's impact in making the campus and town a more inclusive environment for all, not only through her philanthropy and volunteer efforts, but also through the generations of IU students and alumni who Sue has hired, assisted, guided, or mentored. Please join us on Thursday, February 8, to recognize and congratulate Sue, enjoy an evening of festivities and fun in the "Spirit of 76" Suite, and watch the IU Women's Basketball Team defeat Illinois, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Jean Orr |
For nearly a decade, Jean L. Orr has been a trailblazer at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). At a young age, Jean has emerged as an experienced and accomplished leader of the NCAA's inclusion initiatives, working with diverse populations of student-athletes, coaches, university faculty and administrators, and the public. Jean received her bachelor degree in 2002 from Hanover College, where she studied and played as a softball student-athlete. After graduating from Hanover, she served as a team leader for AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. Jean returned to Indiana and earned her masters degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the IU School of Education in 2008. As a graduate student at IU, Jean served as the Student Development & Compliance Practicum Assistant to Mattie White, in which she developed an international student-athlete support group and collaborated with the LGBTQ+ Culture Center (formerly the GLBT Student Support Services Office) to promote awareness of LGBTQ student-athletes as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. After completing her master's degree at IU, Jean began her career with the NCAA as a post-graduate intern in 2008, advancing rapidly to become Coordinator (in 2009) and then Assistant Director (in 2010) of Academic and Membership Affairs. In January 2018, Jean accepted a position with the NCAA Office of Inclusion. Her wife, Cindi Merrill, also works for the NCAA as Associate Director of Enforcement. During her tenure at the NCAA, Jean has served in a wide range of leadership roles. She has been heavily involved in NCAA governance, including serving as staff liaison to numerous committees dealing with rules, compliance, eligibility, and inclusion. Jean has also served as liaison between the NCAA's Academic Outreach Team and two national associations for academic advisors. Jean has been a pivotal leader in the NCAA's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in college athletics, particularly for LGBTQ+ student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff. She currently serves as the primary liaison to the NCAA's LGBTQ Working Group for Division III schools, with responsibility for overseeing the development of a culture/climate survey to guide LGBTQ initiatives and resources. She is also a leader of the NCAA's People of Color Employee Resource Group, serving as co-chair of its Ally-Building Subcommittee. She has been an active participant in the NCAA's "Common Ground" initiative to explore ways to bridge the gap between faith communities and the LGBTQ community. Among her leadership efforts, Jean has collaborated in planning and facilitating the NCAA Inclusion Forum, which works with leaders in higher education and intercollegiate athletics to improve the educational and professional environment for student-athletes, coaches, and staff through policies, research, and best practices that support racial and ethnic minorities, women, international student-athletes, LGBTQ athletes, and athletes with disabilities. In addition, she has helped produce the NCAA's Division III "You Can Play" and "It's On Us" video campaigns. Jean represents the NCAA as an affiliate member of Out & Equal Indiana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving LGBT workplace equality by partnering with companies and government agencies to provide leadership development, comprehensive training, networking opportunities, strategies, and best practices to create equal, inclusive, and welcoming workplaces for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. In addition to her work at the NCAA, Jean has been an active member of Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators). While working at the NCAA, Jean has also continued to pursue her education at IU. She is currently completing a doctoral degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs through the IU School of Education, where her coursework covers topics relevant to under-represented and/or at-risk populations and her research focuses on a qualitative study of lesbian, gay, and bisexual intercollegiate athletics coaches. Thanks in large part to the skilled leadership and tireless efforts of people like Jean, the NCAA continues to embrace and advance the cause of equity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ individuals in college athletics. Please join us on Friday, January, 26, in the Tudor Room of the Indiana Memorial Union to recognize and congratulate Jean and to enjoy an evening of festivities and fun.

5. LGBTQ+AA Scholarships
LGBTQ+AA Academic Scholarships
Academic Scholarships are awarded to IU students enrolled at any IU campus, who are academically strong, as well as active in promoting diversity, tolerance and social justice. Scholarships are awarded to students based upon academic achievement, career goals, financial need, leadership experience, community service and extracurricular activities. Involvement in activities promoting diversity and raising awareness of LGBTQ and related issues on the student's campus or in the student's community is carefully reviewed. The maximum award for an Academic Scholarship is $4,000 per semester. An individual student may not receive more than $8,000. For more information, please visit the IUAA Scholarships page. To apply for an academic scholarship, complete the IU Scholarship Application in your One.IU account. Applications are open from October 1 - March 10 for the following academic year.
LGBTQ+AA Emergency Scholarships
Emergency Scholarships are awarded to those undergraduate students who experience the loss of financial support when they make the courageous decision to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity to their families. Emergency Scholarships help to ensure that students need not choose between their education at IU and living life openly and honestly. Emergency Scholarships are awarded to students attending any IU campus and facing a loss of financial support. The maximum award for an Emergency Scholarship is $5,000 per semester, and a student may not receive more than $10,000.
