News from the Currituck County Center
From the Director
In 2018, Currituck County along with 16 other counties, (all formed out of the County of Albemarle) in our region will celebrate our 350th anniversary! Here at Cooperative Extension, we are proud to join in on the celebration of our local heritage. While we certainly didn’t exist in 1668, when our county was founded, Currituck Extension has had an important role in the development of our county for nearly the last 100 years. From helping farmers control livestock disease or diversify their crops; to helping families and youth by implementing vaccination programs and helping to provide school lunches; Extension has been a vital part of our community’s history.

Be on the lookout for special twists to our existing programming this year. Also, check out the 350th website to stay apprised of what is planned throughout the area at www.350th.com . In the spirit of continuous improvement of our community, I hope you enjoy the educational information provided below or at one of our upcoming events or activities. We look forward to the year of celebration!

Understanding Agriculture: Series Introduction

The agriculture industry plays a vital role in our society. We all engage with agricultural products every single day. Think about it….we all eat! Today, less than 2% of the American population produces the food that the remaining 98% enjoy. Here in Currituck County about ⅕ of the total acreage is farmland. Many of us can look out our windows and see acres of corn, wheat or soybeans. Few of us however, are familiar with the knowledge, skill and abilities it takes to successfully raise these and other agricultural commodities.
Talking With Teens About Positive Values

Today’s teens are our next generation of leaders and the values and lessons they learn today will help to shape the adults they will become tomorrow. When children reach their teen years they are becoming more independent and empowered to try new experiences and to make their own decisions, so where previously they were following a defined set of rules, they are now thinking about and formulating their own set of morals and values. These values will become the base idea for their beliefs, interests, and goals and more importantly, will guide their future decisions and actions. So what can we do to help these young people to become compassionate, honest, respectful and contributing members of our community?
The Truth About Slow & Electric Pressure Cookers

There are two kitchen tools that strike fear in the hearts of home cooks everywhere. To many, the pressure cooker remains one of the scariest cooking tools ever. However the reputation of slow cookers has now taken a turn for the worse after the recent death of Jack Pearson on the popular TV series “This is Us”, as a result of a fire started by a faulty crock pot. Making food at home never sounded so dangerous. I know. But there are a lot of ways to keep you and your family safe. One is to understand the tools you are using, purchase quality and up to date equipment, and operate them safely.
