Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ, Jim casual 8-2014

Today is Valentine's Day! On this day many a young man will pop the question and ask his sweetheart to marry him. Second only to Christmas, Valentine's Day is a big day for wedding engagements.

But given the current divorce rate, we know that about half of those who do get married will end up divorced. This is one of the great tragedies of our modern society.

Because we want a marriage to be a joyful, life-long union between a man and a woman that is founded on a strong relationship with Jesus Christ, we have certain requirements for couples preparing to be married here at Saxe Gotha. One requirement is that the couple regularly attend church together. We believe that marriage is more than two becoming one, rather it is two becoming one to serve God. We want couples to cultivate a strong spiritual relationship as they work to develop a strong emotional relationship.
We also require 4 to 6 sessions of pre-marital counseling to be led by one of the pastors. Weddings need to be scheduled through our wedding coordinator Cindy Williams and far enough in advance to complete this process. Ordinarily, this means beginning the counseling sessions at least 3 months prior to the wedding day.

During this counseling, we explore what it means to have a relationship with Christ as husband and wife. We discuss important issues such as commitment, communication and conflict resolution. We believe that those who take the counseling process seriously will find that it will enrich their marriage. It will help them avoid dangerous pitfalls that could be detrimental to their relationship.

Christians have long understood that the wedding ceremony is a worship service. The word worship comes from the old English word "worthship". Through our worship of God, we attribute him worth for who he is and what he has done. Yet so often in our society, a wedding service easily becomes a display of the family of the bride's cleverness, wealth and tastes, and undue focus is placed on the couple. However, these services are not so much for the edification of the couples as they are for the glory and honor of God. Our prayer is that each couple who enters into the covenant of marriage will enjoy a life-long union in the service of Jesus Christ.

So, let's be sure to pray for those who will be asking and answering the question sometime today, "Will you marry me?"

In Christ's love,
Pastor Jim

SGPC Prayer Garden Dedication:
In the early 1990's, Shirley Murray started the prayer garden and added a memory stone to honor her husband Tom, who had gone to be with the Lord. Since 2007, Jane Jones has planted and cared for the garden. A beautiful arbor was built and installed by Evan Birchmore for his Eagle Scout project.

Most recently, a generous gift was given to Caring Connections from Esther Ferrell's family, the Werners and the Koons, because of CC members who had faithfully visited Esther. Caring Connections then placed an a ngel with a plaque in t he pr ayer garden in memory of Esther and cross with a plaque to honor Jane.

We thank Jane Jones for her quiet ministry of hope that allows for a special place of prayer for all to enjoy.

Stephen Ministry  is our congregation's one-to-one care giving ministry. These connections are confidential and matched up by gender. God works through Stephen Ministers to plant a seed of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of crisis or tragedy.  What do Stephen Ministers do?  These individuals listen to people in need, explore feelings, pray, share Christ's love, maintain confidentiality, and attend to the care-giving process, while leaving the results to God.  Stephen Ministers have big hearts.  If you are feeling unloved or need a friend, contact  Carol Perrin  at (803)917-6690 , the referral coordinator.
