Dismantling Racism Team News

Ongoing Follow-up on Dismantling Racism in the UUA: In 2017, UUCF joined hundreds other UU congregations in holding two UU White Supremacy Teach-ins on accountably dismantling oppressions in ourselves and our institutions. For background, visit frederickuu.org/TeachIn. Also in 2017, the UUA Board of Trustees appointed a Commission on Institutional Change to analyze structural racism and white supremacy within the UUA. The latest update from the Commission is available at  medium.com/@UUA_OnChange/feb-10-2018-dba2d0da021e. On Tuesday, the UUA Board discussed this at length with the Commission and were able to answer their most urgent questions.  We will continue to provide updates about this long-term process of cultural and institutional change.

David Hilliard Eaton (1932-1992) was the first African American to serve as senior minister in a large Unitarian Universalist church. During his tenure, All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, DC became a center of community service and social action, and was the first congregation within the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) to achieve a racially balanced black and white membership.

The church, he maintained, "is that institution whose primary purpose is to help people discover, create, and maintain hope in their lives. . . . When people have no hope, they discover hope together, [and] when they cannot discover hope, they create hope together." He was fond of saying that "some of us are clergy, but all of us are ministers" and that "ministry is a process whereby one attempts to bring the best out of him or her self in every situation, thus eliciting the best from the other person or persons." His work as a peacemaker, a force for justice and empowerment, and a proponent of multi-racial respect, in both the church and the larger community, were firmly grounded in his religious beliefs.  Learn more about Rev. David Eaton at  http://uudb.org/articles/davidheaton.html

Seminary for a Day with The Rev. Dr. Mark Morrison-Reed: Saturday, March 24, 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cedar Lane UU, Bethesda, MD. From the African Gloster Dalton, who in 1785 was one of the signatories of the Charter of Glouster Universalist Society, to Edna Griffin, who was known as the Rosa Parks of Des Moines, to Rev. Yvonne Seon, who in 1981 was the first African American woman ordainde into the UU ministry, there are many UUs of color of whom UUs are ignorant. Not knowing about this has allowed a false narrative about who UUs have been to flourish. Why, when it comes to African Americans, is there a black hole in white consciousness? and what purpose has it served? Carpooling from UUCF. Visit:  https://www.facebook.com/events/380694652379613/
