Notes from the Arts Blast desk:
Have you noticed yourself or friends doing things you might consider unusual behavior as social distancing and staying home drag on and on and on? You have? Yes, but can you top this?
I've known Larry Reisman ( TCPalm.com) for years, probably decades, but as a media colleague. A typical meeting might go like this:
Both: Hi, how ya doing?
Both: Great, thanks.
Me: Love reading your community column in the paper.
LR: You're doing a great job with Arts Blast.
Both: Thanks! Good to see you.
Last week, we ran into each other in the produce section at Publix. We caught up for a minute and then I felt compelled to tell him about a song I heard on a British TV series. River. But did I stop there? Oh, no. I actually tried to sing My Baby Loves to Dance, a disco number from the '70s, with as much footwork as I could muster. Larry laughed, but he recognized the song!
What goofy things have you been doing? Don't leave me hanging out there. I can't be the only one! Or can I?
|
|
I'm a masker, one of the few ways I feel I can contribute to the fight against this virus. If you aren't one already, please consider joining me.
We'll get there, but we have to wait patiently and safely and remember that "there" might not be exactly the way we remember it. Nobody said it would be easy.

Recommended for Ages 8 and up
Please provide 32 measures of a pop or modern Broadway song in your video audition.
Rehearsals Begin: September 14, 2020 from 4:30-6:30pm via Zoom
The first few weeks of rehearsals will be conducted online via Zoom. When they shift to being in person, only cast members needed for a scene will be called to rehearsal to keep numbers lower to better ensure social distancing.

St.Lucie Cultural Alliance's Featured Artist:
August 6, 2020 | St. Lucie Cultural Alliance | Artist Member Profile – Janet Bird Fuller Contributing Writer: Laura Louise Tingo
Janet Bird Fuller’s artistry is showcased in her magnificent, eclectic collection of steampunk mixed media and found object artist works. A second-generation artist from Fort Pierce, Fuller, surrounded by art at home, was already painting and cartooning at an early age. Her father, a police sketch artist, is credited for initially sparking and fostering Janet’s creative interest.
“He taught me a lot over the years,” Fuller said. “I used to paint and cartoon, but then I got bored, so I stopped for a while.”
Fuller recalls, without hesitation the year that her creativity was re-booted, when in 2011, while driving by a trash-heap, she saw, “…some interesting pieces,” and thought, “Now that would make great art.”
In 2012, Fuller realized her first professional exhibit and has been exhibiting ever since.
Fast-forward to present day, Fuller is exhibiting her diverse and dynamic collection of works
made from recyclable materials at the new Whirled Inc Gallery, 129 N. Second Street, in Fort Pierce.
“Janet’s artwork and my artwork go very well together,” said Fogle, artist and the owner and operator of Whirled Inc Gallery. “She has great work here and really is an incredible artist.” Read more here.

The Lyric Living Room Series - Tuesday's Tempo@2
|
Pianist Lindsay Garritson is featured in a three-performance series presented by the Arts Council of Martin County and the Lyric theatre. The first recital was this week.
Garritson talked about bringing her music to the stage again. " Last May, I had a conversation with Kia Fontaine of the Lyric and Nancy Turrell of the Arts Council in which we brainstormed how we might bring some beautiful music to people in their homes. I had already been recording videos from my own home throughout April and May, and we thought sharing a few programs of great piano music from the Lyric could be a way to 'invite' people back to the concert hall. As a performing artist, I know I have missed live concerts dearly during these past several months, and I couldn't be happier or more grateful to share music from our beloved Lyric."

Hosted by perennial Tanglewood favorite James Taylor, The Best of Tanglewood on Parade—a video stream of highlights from past Tanglewood on Parade concerts—features the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood Music Center orchestras, as well as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Boston Symphony Children’s Choir, in selections led by conductors Andris Nelsons, Keith Lockhart, John Williams, James Burton, and Seiji Ozawa. The free program is available online on Tuesday, August 18 at 8 p.m. at www.tanglewood.org, and can be viewed through Tuesday, August 25.
One of Tanglewood’s most beloved traditions, Tanglewood on Parade (TOP) dates back to 1940, when BSO Music Director Serge Koussevitzky organized an "Allied Relief Fund Benefit." This typically day-long event has included performances by students of the Berkshire Music Center (now Tanglewood Music Center) featuring chamber music, orchestral music, brass fanfares, opera scenes, and choral works, culminating with a gala concert in the Shed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood Music Center orchestras. In 1946, following WWII, the benefit was renamed Tanglewood on Parade and has become an annual celebration of and a fundraiser to support the activities of the Music Center.

From the BBC:
Diana the musical will be streamed on Netflix next year before it makes its official Broadway debut.
This is an unprecedented move for the entertainment industry which is dealing with coronavirus restrictions.
Broadway theatres remain closed during the pandemic and may not reopen this year, according to experts.
The musical, based on the life story of Princess Diana, is now not scheduled to open on Broadway until 25 May next year.
A filmed version of the musical, featuring the original Broadway cast, will be made without an audience in New York. Neftlix hasn't given a date for when this will be streamed on its site.
