We Weep With Those Who Weep
Tragedy strikes in our diocese as shooter takes lives at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Parish Youth Leader Among Victims.

In a statement to the clergy, diocesan officials said:
There are no words to make sense of what makes no sense, and in the face of such senseless killing we are numbed and rendered speechless ... But let us stand in solidarity with our people and proclaim our confidence and hope in the steadfast love of the God who weeps with us and in whose love is the power to redeem and make us whole.

New Archdeacon of Southeast Florida

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In this capacity Deacon Somers will have oversight  with  me of the diaconal ministry of our diocese.   She will maintain relationships with our deacons, work with me on assignments, and oversee the further development of diaconal ministry. She will be assisted in this work by a council of deacons.

We shall install Deacon Somers into this new responsibility at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday, 27 March, at 12 noon.   All are welcome to that service.

As we announce this new responsibility, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Reverend Canon Hap Lewis for the many years of service that he has given in supporting the work of our deacons.   He has been a faithful servant in this work, and he hands over to Deacon Somers a good tradition.   We shall celebrate his ministry with our deacons  at  the same service.

Archdeacon Fritz Bazin will continue as Archdeacon for Immigration and Social Justice.

Please join me in welcoming Deacon Somers to this new work among us, and please keep her and all our deacons in your prayers.

With every blessing.

Friendly Annual Reminders from the Bishop's Office

As the calendar year ends and a new one begins, there are a few items which
need to be managed to keep your congregation in good standing in the  Diocese:

Annual Congregation Meeting

Each Episcopal Congregation is required to conduct an annual business
meeting , where, among other matters, congregation lay leaders are elected,
among them, Convention Delegates and Alternates every two years.  Canon
XIV requires the meeting be conducted by the last day of January each  year.

Parochial Report Filing

The Parochial Report is due to be recorded by February 28th each year.
While the national canon requires the filing be completed at another date,
our annual budget process dictates an earlier filing, as it is essential to the
development of next year's budget.

Key Personnel Report

To best enable the Bishop's office to communicate with the appropriate
church leader you need to file an updated Key Personnel Listing. This
report is due to be filed on-line by February 28th of each year. You should
update the report anytime a change in your leadership occurs.

Annual Corporate Report

The annual corporate filing with the State of Florida is required to keep
your Church Corporation viable. I t is due to Tallahassee by April 30th.

Annual Congregation and Discretionary Fund Audits

One of the useful tools to maintain transparency in each congregation is to
prepare an annual audit of the church books, this protects the integrity of
the records, and those who do this work. The annual audit is due into the
Bishop's office by September first each year

Saint Mark's Peace Lecture Series 2018 & Beyond Bridges Art Exhibit

Saint Mark's fifth annual Peace Lecture Series, Finding Peace through the Arts, features three lecturers and includes the ground-breaking interfaith East-West contemporary art exhibit, Beyond Bridges, that will be on display at Saint Mark's from February 18 through March 12, 2018. Artists, writers, and musicians often produce their greatest works in times of great tumult and change. They speak a truth that transcends our words, and they invite us to connect with one another in creative and powerful ways.

This year's Peace Lecture series explores how art, music and literature unite people of differing creeds and cultures into one fabric of humanity. For three Thursday evening - February 22, March 1, and March 8 - a interesting lineup of speakers will offer insight into how images, music, and literature help to build bridges and tear down walls that separate us.

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals by 10 Death Row inmates, including a man scheduled to be executed Feb. 22 in the 1993 slaying of a University of West Florida student.
The Supreme Court's release of 10 nearly identical rulings at the same time was unusual . But each of the cases involved inmates challenging their death sentences because juries did not unanimously recommend execution.

The inmates included Eric Scott Branch, who was scheduled Friday by Gov. Rick Scott to be executed Feb. 22.
The other inmates were Pressley Bernard Alston in a Duval County case; Kayle Barrington Bates in a Bay County case; Donald Bradley in a Clay County case; Marvin Burnett Jones in a Duval County case; Daniel Jon Peterka in an Okaloosa County case; Harry Franklin Phillips in a Miami-Dade County case; Jason Demetrius Stephens in a Duval County case; Ernest D. Suggs in a Walton County case; and Frank A. Walls in an Okaloosa County case.

The appeals were rooted in a 2016 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a case known as Hurst v. Florida and a subsequent Florida Supreme Court decision. The 2016 U.S. Supreme Court ruling found Florida's death-penalty sentencing system was unconstitutional because it gave too much authority to judges , instead of juries.

The subsequent Florida Supreme Court ruling said juries must unanimously agree on critical findings before judges can impose death sentences and must unanimously recommend the death penalty. But the Florida Supreme Court made the new sentencing requirements apply to cases since 2002.

That is when the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling known as Ring v. Arizona that was a premise for striking down Florida's death-penalty sentencing system in 2016.

In each of the cases Monday, the Death Row inmates had been sentenced to death before the Ring decision.

  Episcopal Historically Black
Colleges and University

In honor of February Black History Month and Blessed Absalom Jones, the first African American priest in the Episcopal Church, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has called for an increased understanding and commitment to the Episcopal Historically Black Colleges and University, known as HBCUs.

The Presiding Bishop invites Episcopalians "to deepen our participation in Christ's ministry of reconciliation by dedicating offerings at observances of the Feast of Absalom Jones to support the two remaining Episcopal Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCUs): St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, NC, and Voorhees College in Denmark, SC."

The two institutions of higher education were founded in the later 19th century as an Episcopal Church missionary venture. "These schools bring educational, economic, and social opportunity to often resource-poor communities, and they offer many blessings into the life of the Episcopal Church," he said.

Donations to the HBCUs will provide much needed help to: offer competitive scholarships and financial aid; attract and retain exceptional faculty; support cutting-edge faculty research; install new and upgraded technology campus-wide; provide state-of-the-art classroom and athletic equipment.

"The Episcopal Church established and made a life-long covenant with these schools, and they are an essential part of the fabric of our shared life," the Presiding Bishop noted.

At the 2009 General Convention, Lent was officially designated as a time to encourage dioceses, congregations, and individuals to remember and support the life-saving work of Episcopal Relief & Development. We invite all Episcopalians to join together on Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday, and throughout the Lenten season, to pray for those living in need.

Please also consider dedicating a special offering in support of our mission to assist people impacted by poverty worldwide. Ruah
 RUAH
Wednesday Nights at 7:30 P.M

RUAH is a weekly worship service on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 8:30pm at the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, located at 16711 West Dixie Highway.
There is plenty of free parking.

RUAH is grounded in the Anglican tradition, a  centuries -old liturgy that reveals the presence of God in our midst. We call this reality "sacramental." RUAH brings forth the richness of the mysteries of the Christian faith, practiced through the centuries by monks, nuns, mystics, saints, and ordinary people.

RUAH will engage the musical community in Miami and surrounding areas by bringing in guest musicians for each season who play instruments from around the world. Classical hymns and prayers are arranged with modern and ancient instrumentation, rhythms, and sounds. We will cross centuries and continents as we worship together in the liturgy the roots of which are in  the earliest Christian community that was gathered after Jesus was raised from the dead.

RUAH, which means "spirit" or "breath" in Hebrew, invites all people, no matter your faith background, or no faith background at all, to breathe in God's living Spirit, and to rest in the beauty and wonder of the spoken word and the real presence of Christ among us with a backdrop of sound, light, shadow, and form.

Bishop Eaton contributes to New Publication:
The Oxford History of Anglicanism,  Volume V

Oxford University Press has launched the first multi-volume, international history of Anglicanism ever to be published, and our Bishop is one of the contributors. Over 100 scholars from around the Communion have been part of this project, and the Bishop wrote the chapter on the relations between the Anglican Communion and the Churches of the Christian East in the 20th century in volume V. This volume was published in December, and all volumes in the series are now in print.

"It was an honor to be asked by Professor Sachs, the editor of this volume, to be a contributor," the Bishop has said. "I did most of the research for the chapter when I was still the Dean in Denver and when I was a Fellow-in-Residence at Sewanee, but I had to do a great deal of the final work on the chapter after we moved to Miami. It meant some late nights and some early mornings, and I tried the patience of the editor very sorely. But he was extremely supportive and helpful, and we got it done."

Asked why he had been invited to do this, Bishop Eaton said,  "I have been interested in the Churches of the East since I was a teenager, and our dialogue and relations have been a significant part of my work throughout my life as a priest and bishop," Bishop Eaton said. "While the 20th century was a terrible century for humanity in so many ways, it was a time of radical - and positive - change in the relationship between the Churches. Anglicans and Eastern Christians in particular came to a special relationship.

"Sadly the Churches, especially the great traditions of Anglicanism, Roman Catholicism  and   Orthodoxy ,   have lost some of that ecumenical vision that so inspired our predecessors in the last century, and part of the point of my chapter is to ensure that we do not lose sight of a time when we were very close. If it happened once, it can happen again, and we can turn towards each other afresh in mutual respect and appreciation for the singular witness that our traditions bring to the life of the universal Church."

The Bishop's chapter, "Relations between the Churches of the Anglican Communion and the Churches of Eastern Christianity," appears in The Oxford History of Anglicanism Volume V: Global Anglicanism c 1910-2000, edited by William Sachs, and published in the UK on 14 December 2017.

The Good Book Club: Resources Now Available

A wide range of resources, from prayers to videos to study guides, are now available from the more than 25 partners presenting the Good Book Club, an opportunity for reflection and prayer.

Prayers

The prayer is for your use. We suggest that you integrate it into your service
schedule either by using the prayer and incorporating the weekly specific ministry into it, OR by highlighting only the specified weekly ministry in the Prayers of the People.

Compassionate God, bless the people who guide the programs of Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of Southeast Florida as, following in the footsteps of Jesus, they minister to the sick, the friendless and the needy. We pray especially for_______________ ( ministry name) which provides _____________ ( ministry description) through ____________________ ( parish or entity sponsor). Help them continue always to reach out in love and mercy to those suffering in our communities, that they may be a source of comfort and support in times of need; through Jesus Christ who called us to feed his sheep in manifesting our love for him. Amen.

SmallGrants

MORE SMALL GRANTS!

In 2018, EC is offering 12 Small Grants of $1000 each for start up or expanded basic human needs ministries in our diocese. In addition, two Small Grants are available for basic human needs programs in our companion dioceses. Those are the Diocese of Nassau and the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, the Diocese of the Dominican Republic, the Diocese of Haiti and The Diocese of Toliara.

The Companion Diocese Small Grants are designed to launch or enhance a basic human needs activity or ministry (hunger, clothing, shelter and healthcare focuses) that needs an infusion of cash with the understanding that other types of support will follow.

Companion Diocese Small Grant criteria are aligned with criteria for Diocesan Small Grants. (Criteria and application questions are available under Grant Applications on the Episcopal Charities website, www.ecsefl.org).

Additional criteria are as follows:

A request must be for one of the companion dioceses and the two grants each year will not be made to the same Companion Diocese.

The program must be sponsored by a diocesan church(s)

Small Grants are made for programs, not individuals.

Like the Basic Human Needs Grant making program and Small Grants Program, the Companion Diocese Small Grant Program allocates grants to ministries/programs that address the needs of the community outside the walls of the church. Programs must be non-sectarian and contain no required religious content.

SUMMA Theological Debate Camp is Accepting Applications

SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society is inviting high school students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2018 to apply for SUMMA Debate Camp, held July 17-25 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. SUMMA Camp is a unique opportunity for students to explore their faith through intellectual channels, meet lifelong friends, and have a lot of fun on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country!

At SUMMA Camp, students of all faiths learn valuable skills for debate, public speaking, and theological reflection. No previous debate experience or formal theological study is necessary. Campers have a true collegiate experience, but camp is not all work! There is plenty of time left over to swim, play sports, watch movies, go bowling, and have lots of great, summer fun!

For all students, the cost of SUMMA is partially defrayed through donations, grants, and an endowment. The cost to parents is $750, which includes room, all meals, and all materials.

A limited number of scholarships are available for students with demonstrated financial need.

For more information and to apply, visit summa.sewanee.edu, or contact recruitment specialist Walker Adams at  hwadams@sewanee.edu.
