EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #23
February 16, 2018

Dear Panther Parents,

I want to first say that my heart goes out to all the students, staff, and families affected by the tragic shooting this week.  We are fortunate at Evans to have Officer Mo on our campus. She consistently checks our exterior doors to ensure they are locked and that our lockdown protocols are in place.  We work diligently on our campus to provide safety for all (as does all of MISD...see link below).

Another way to keep our students safe is from a health perspective.  We are continuing to increase our custodial efforts.  You are welcome to send students with mini hand sanitizers...please no large containers.

Open House is this Thursday from 5:00-6:30.  Please make note of some of the special meetings taking place on campus that night.  See the Open House flyer for specific times and locations for this special meetings.

Calling all GT parents: Ms. Green will be on campus for a morning "bagels and coffee" meeting this coming Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:30.  You bring your coffee, she will supply the bagels!  We hope you can join her for this informational meeting.

Please encourage your child to submit a piece of art, poetry, short story, etc for our 1st Annual Anthology.  Submissions are due February 27th.  We only have 5 submissions and we need more to be able to publish the work of our students.

Hoops for Heart is up and running and we have already collected over $2500 in donations, but our goal is $10,000. Please allow/encourage your child to register online per the Hoops for Heart brochure.  The link is American.heart.org.

Grades for progress reports will be viewable by the end of the day on Tuesday.  Monday is a student holiday.  Enjoy the 3 day weekend!

Happy Friday,
Darla

    WINTER ILLNESS GUIDELINES

Winter Illnesses
We would like to remind all parents of the importance of keeping sick children home.  When a child comes to school ill, he/she can spread illness by coughing, touching his/her nose/mouth and then touching objects that other students come in contact with.

Remember that fever is not the only sign of true illness and that fever is usually a late sign of an illness, or an illness that is progressing.

If your child is out sick remember to always send in a note from the Dr or a parent note.

MISD Health policies are in place to help insure a healthy school where students can learn and grow.  Please take a moment to review the exclusions that are listed below.

Guidelines for Returning to School after an Illness

In order to minimize the number of children that are ill, we ask you to please consider the following guidelines when making your decision to let your child attend school or return to school after an illness.

A student with any of the following symptoms must be excluded from school until such time as the student is free from symptoms.
  • Temperature of 100.0 degrees or more. Student must be fever free for 24 hours, without    medication, before re-entry (Texas Administrative Code)
  • Vomiting (not related to a single event such as gagging, positioning, mucus, running after eating, or eating spicy food) Student must be symptom free for 24 hours, without medication before reentry.
  • Diarrhea, of two or more loose or watery stools; all students
must be diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of medications before re-entry (Texas Administrative Code).
  • Pain and/or swelling at angle of jaw
  • Undetermined rash over any part of the body accompanied by fever
  • Under diagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp
  • Red, draining eyes
  • Intense itching with signs and symptoms of secondary infection
  • Open, draining lesions or wounds
  • Jaundice
  • See McKinney ISD Lice guidelines
  • A vaccine preventable illness in question will require a physician's note for re-entry (pertussis, mumps, measles, etc.).
  • For any infection, antibiotics must be taken for a minimum of 24 hours prior to re-entry to school.
These guidelines have been designed to give your child adequate time to recover, as well as keep the majority of the students, faculty and staff as healthy as possible.

Hand Washing

Hand washing is one of the easiest and best ways to prevent the spread of disease. Direct contamination of your mucus membranes (eyes, nose and/or mouth) is how many infectious diseases enter your body. So let's work together to decrease the risk of contracting and spreading illnesses by following these three simple rules:
  • Wash your hands when they are dirty and before you eat.
  • Do not cough or sneeze into your hands (use your sleeve, elbow or shoulder instead).
  • Never put fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.
Remember...you are responsible for keeping yourself healthy!! Be as nice to yourself as you are to others.

MISD STUDENTS TO GET THEIR HEARTS CHECKED!

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEER TRYOUTS

Middle school cheer try-outs are just around the corner.  CURRENT 6TH graders that are trying out for cheerleader/mascot who have already picked up their cheer packet from Coach Gilbert will need to get a NEW physical form from Coach Gilbert.  Forms will be available on February 12th.  Only MISD physicals will be accepted, so do not get your physical before February 12th and without the new form.  You do not need to wait for the physical form to pick up your cheer packet.
  • If a 6th grader has an MISD physical dated 2/12/18 or later, that will be accepted for their entire 7th grade year for both cheer and athletics.  This applies only to those trying out for cheerleaders.
  • If a 7th grader who has never participated in athletics or cheer has an MISD physical dated 2/12/18 or later, that will be accepted for their entire 8th grade year for both cheer and athletics.  This applies only to those trying out for cheerleaders.
  • All other middle school athletes/cheerleaders must have physicals dated 4/1/18 or later to be accepted for the 20178-2019 school year.

Mandatory cheer parent meeting:

PROJECT GRADUATION NEEDS YOU!!!

Attention parents of Elementary and Middle School Students . . .

McKinney's Project Graduation is back . . .and we need YOU ! ! !

Why are we asking for your help when you don't have high school students?   Because in 2017 Project Graduation didn't take place due to a lack of community support. And we want to make sure that never happens again! We need to keep Project Graduation going strong so it's there when your students are seniors. Why? Because Project Graduation keeps graduating seniors (and the community) safe by providing a lock-in style event with fun activities, entertainment, food and prizes (including a FREE CAR!).   It is supported and run ENTIRELY by volunteers, parent groups, booster clubs, and local businesses.
You have the potential to save lives - please consider supporting this worthwhile event. What can you do to help? It's simple...we need sponsors, prize donations and volunteers.
If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Nancy Nori at (716) 517-5090 or [email protected]
Visit our website at http://www.mckinneys-project-graduation.com/  and click on the buttons to donate or volunteer.
Thank you in advance for your support!!

Click HERE to go directly to the link.
Thank you so very much!  We look forward to having you on our campus!

Volunteer applications may take up to two weeks to be processed.

IMPORTANT PARENT INFORMATION

Dear Parents,

Although some of he following information is not new, we would like to remind you of a few policies we have in place here at Evans Middle School.  We can't thank you enough for your cooperation!

*For the safety and security of all MISD students and staff, everyone is required to show government issued ID (driver's license, identification card, passport etc.) upon entering the campus or accessing student information.

*In the event your student forgets an item at home, you are welcome to leave it on the cabinet in the front office. Please make sure it is clearly and visibly marked with your student's name. We cannot be responsible for anything left on the cabinet and all food items will be thrown out at 3:45pm. In an effort to keep our classrooms as free from disruption as possible, we will not make phone calls or deliveries to students for items left for pick up.

*We are happy to have your student come to the front office to be checked out once you are in the building, but we do not call students in advance. This will keep our students in the classroom as much as possible. If your student is in a fine arts class, lunch or a PE/Athletics class, please allow for additional time when picking them up. Please be sure that the person picking up your student is on your contact list. We will need to see your driver's license every time you enter campus. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

*We will not be able to call a classroom for dismissal after 3:15pm in order to minimize disruption at the end of the school day. If you must pick your student up at the end of the day, please arrive in plenty of time to meet this deadline. We appreciate your understanding.

*While you are welcome to bring lunch up to school for your child, bringing food to anyone other than your student is prohibited. This is a federally mandated directive.
