US sees eighth consecutive year of spirits growth   by Lauren Eads, The Drinks Business

Adult hands holding glasses of distilled spirits
The US Distilled Spirits Council has reported on an eighth consecutive year of growth for spirits, with sales up $1 billion (4%) to reach a total of $26.2 billion in 2017, while volumes increased 2.6% to 226 million cases - the equivalent of 5.8m.

The increase in value reflects consumers' "ongoing taste for higher-end distilled spirits" across most categories, the council said, with spirits gaining market share of 36.6%.

The trade association also projected a new export record of $1.63 billion of US spirits sold around the globe in 2017, rising 14.3% compared with 2016, with volumes increasing by 5%.

Interstate Shipping for Illinois craft distillers

Bottles ready to be sold.
Fred and Janet Robinson of Copper Fiddle Distillery in Lake Zurich, Illinois will be in Springfield, IL later in the month to support Bill SB2286. This bill is very simply allows craft distillers in Illinois, defined as distillers who produce no more than 10,000 gallons per year, to self-distribute up to 2,500 gallons per year in the state of Illinois. Link to the amended bill.

The State Senator Dan McConchie filed this bill. It is co-sponsored by Senator William Brady and Senator Heather Steans.
The bill accomplishes the following:
1. Brings PARITY with breweries and wineries who are already permitted to self-distribute a portion of their production.
2. Enables direct business locally between craft distillers and local restaurants, bars and retailers to support establishment of new accounts.
3. Allows for smaller businesses to purchase on as needed basis to improve cash flow, minimize inventory stocking, and increase the variety of products they can offer.
4. Increase the sales through distributors as the new accounts would transition to distribution sales.
5. Improves customer service
6. Attracts new craft distilleries to open in Illinois. Greater than 14 other states allow for self-distribution including our neighboring states of Missouri and Indiana, making the state less competitive.

Send an email to [email protected] showing your support of changing inter state shipping laws. Among others supporting this bill is Brenton Engel of Letherbee Distillery.

San Diego helped popularize craft beer.
Are craft spirits next?  by Peter Rowe for Los Angeles Times

A basketful of ingredients provides the flavors of Sunday Gin, the signature product of San Diego East Village's  You & Yours distillery: grapefruit, Valencia oranges, kaffir limes, rose hips, raspberry leaves, juniper berries, coriander and mint.
While not in the bottle, another ingredient provides the inspiration: beer.
San Diego County's emerging craft spirits industry is cribbing from the craft beer playbook. Like the San Diego Brewers Guild, the San Diego Distillers Guild stresses its status as independent, small-batch producers and has adopted craft beer's all-for-one ethos, focusing on collaboration rather than competition.
"Craft distilling across the country and here in San Diego - probably even more so - is absolutely on the same trajectory as craft beer," said Laura Johnson, You & Yours' founder and distiller.

Anti-alcohol resolution booted by a legislative panel
by Bob Mercer State Capitol Bureau, Capital Journal

Matt Walz_ the South Dakota Alcohol Policy Alliance
Matt Walz said the South Dakota Alcohol Policy Alliance takes a free-market approach to the issue. "We believe in free markets and free-market economics," Walz said.
A legislative resolution calling for "thoughtful taxation" of alcohol products in South Dakota ran into stiff opposition Thursday from some state lawmakers.

The House Health and Human Services Committee voted 8-3 against adopting it.

HCR 1007 called "for alcohol to become budget neutral rather than a drain on the resources and the economy of South Dakota."

S.C. barrel maker complements
craft  beverage boom   By Carl Danbury

Close up of barrel cooper at work
The power of observation has led to countless new business ventures, but those that become a success often are linked more to quality customer service and adhering to a customer's needs, perhaps even more so than the idea or product itself. Greg Pierce, who once cut his teeth on what went into barrels, is now more concerned with locating high quality quarter-sawn American White Oak to craft the barrels themselves. Pierce and a group of investors opened Black Water Barrels in the summer of 2016, and began production of 30-, 53- and 60-gallon barrels for bourbon, rum, tequila, beer, ale, cider, wine, Cognac and hot sauce early in 2017. Had the business been founded in Kentucky, Missouri or Minnesota, few would have batted an eye, but Bamberg, S.C., a town of nearly 4,000 folks, is most...  Read more.
