Go, Vikings!

Evening Community Coffee: Feb. 21
Would you like more direct information about H-F High School and have been unable to attend morning meetings? Would you like more opportunities to speak with school leaders in person? Please join Superintendent Dr. Von Mansfield, Principal Dr. Jerry Lee Anderson, other administrators,  and Board of Education members, if available, at an evening Community Coffee on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. in the TLC. Administrators say that these informal meetings have been very helpful for them and that they have appreciated all of the direct feedback from parents, incoming parents and community members. Reminder from the Nurses' Office
businesswoman_allergies.jpg
H-F's nurses - Mrs. Parker (North) & Mrs. Kemp (South) - have been noticing an increase in the number of students arriving and heading home sick from school, and would like to remind parents of the following:

Illinois is currently the No. 2 state in the country for most reported cases of influenza. Your best defense - besides getting your flu immunization - is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water and to limit close contact with those exhibiting flu-like symptoms. People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning one day before their symptoms develop and up to 7 days after becoming sick. If you get sick with flu-like symptoms, the Center for Disease Control recommends that you stay at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone, except to get medical care or other necessities. Also, if your student is exhibiting signs of a stomach virus (i.e. vomiting, stomach pain), please keep him/him at home until the symptoms have subsided for at least 24 hours.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Last week, Mr. Elfner's 2nd Period AP US History class had a video conference with Dr. Bert Vaux, professor of Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Vaux is an expert in American regional dialects, and he discussed with the students how and why the English language possesses regional characteristics. The students especially enjoyed his discussion of the pronunciation of the word "crayon" (often pronounced as "cran") and "milk" (often pronounced "melk"). Dr. Vaux, himself a native of Chicago, discussed how settlement patterns often dictate regional dialect, and gave tips on certain "giveaway" words that can reveal where a person is from.

Students in Mrs. Watkins' Biology classes celebrated the life of and the contributions Henrietta Lacks made to science on Monday. Students participated in trivia contests, took selfies with specially themed photo props and shared their thoughts on her life story. Several students stayed after school to watch a free viewing of HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in the H-F Library. The book the movie was based on (under the same title) was the H-F Reads selection in 2013.
