William Allen White's 150th birthday party
Join us this week to celebrate William Allen White's 150th birthday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Clarkson Gallery. There will be lots of cupcakes and we'll also kick off the J-School's new mentoring program. Students who sign up for the mentoring program will get J-School branded giveaways and will be entered into a drawing for a new J-School T-shirt.
Faculty and staff
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford  has been asked by Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication President Jennifer Greer to join the AEJMC Advisory Board for the Institute for Diverse Leadership. The purpose of the IDL is to increase racial, gender and ethnic diversity in administrative and other senior-level positions in journalism and mass communication education. The Institute is co-sponsored by the AEJMC and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. Crawford's three-year turn begins immediately and run through 2021. Crawford asks if you have colleagues or others you may know who may be interested in self-nominating or nominating someone else, to contact him or go to this link for further information.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Bengtson Faculty Mentoring Award. Tim Bengtson  taught and mentored more than 12,000 students during his more than 30 years at KU. During his tenure, Bengtson established a legacy as an outstanding advisor to his students and a trusted friend to his colleagues in the School of Journalism. This award honors and recognizes School of Journalism faculty members who demonstrate Bengtson's dedication to student mentorship. Learn more about the award here. Dr. Paul Bollsa professor and director of Media Minds Insights, a neuromarketing research group in the Center for Communication at Texas Tech University College of Media & Communication, is visiting the J-School this week. Chad Martin, director of Social and Emerging Media at VML, visited Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo's J615 Social Media in Strategic Communication class on Jan. 23. The class will work with VML throughout the semester to develop social media campaigns for the U.S. Navy. 
Research and presentations
Assistant Professor Hong Vu and Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo's panel proposal has been accepted to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference in Washington, D.C., in August 2018. The panel's discussion topic is "Displaced and Marginalized: The Implications of Digital Literacy, Digital Technology and Social Media Use by Immigrants and Refugees." Other panelists include scholars from Columbia University, Harvard University, Rutgers University and Pew Research Center.

A research paper by Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen and Assistant Professor Hong Vu, "The Role of Contextual and Structural Factors in Antibiotic Use Among European Union Citizens: A Multilevel Analysis," has been selected for the 68th annual International Communication Association conference in Prague in May. In this paper, Chen and Vu analyzed data from 28 European countries on their media use and perception of antibiotic use and effects.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas and J-School Ph.D./law student Harrison Rosenthal have had their Research-in-Progress abstract, "Truthful Information, Interested Parties? Justice Thomas' Notions of Government Speech Regulation," accepted for presentation in the Law and Policy Division at AEJMC's 2018 Southeast Colloquium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on March 8-10. They will send a draft of their paper in advance to a discussant and then, at the conference, be part of a roundtable where they will present a five-minute "elevator pitch" for discussion to other participants (as well as participate in discussions on other research). This is the inaugural offering of the Law and Policy Division's Research-In-Progress session at the Southeast Colloquium.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas will discuss her research on flag law and rhetoric at the Red Hot Research session at 4 p.m. Feb. 9 at The Commons in Spooner Hall.


Associate Professor Doug Ward led a workshop on strategies for communicating the importance of liberal education at the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C.

Student news and opportunities
The J-210 sports class (above) met this week in Allen Fieldhouse for tours of Rock Chalk Video and the CBS production truck. Thanks to Mike Lickert and Jonathan Segal for sharing their knowledge with our students.

In a partnership with the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication, KUAthletics.com will provide live video streaming of eight KU softball home games. The student-produced coverage begins on March 28 as the Jayhawks face SIUE, followed by all three games in the Colorado State series March 30-31. The online video coverage continues into Big 12 play with two games of the Oklahoma State series, April 7-8, and two games of the Texas Tech series, April 28-29. The Jayhawk Radio Network's audio coverage will be available live on the KUAthletics.com/radio or on the official Kansas Jayhawks mobile app. Student broadcaster Nick Springer will call the action on the Jayhawk Radio Network. His call will also be simulcast on the eight video-streamed games available on KUAthletics.com.
Odyssey, an online platform for millennials who want to share their voices, is looking for journalism students to join its team. Odyssey Creators submit one piece of content per week and can write about any topic for an audience of over 30 million readers per month. Fellowships

The CBS News Fellowship program is now accepting applications for its summer internship program. This highly competitive program identifies outstanding aspiring journalists who bring a variety of backgrounds to news production and news coverage. The CBS News Fellowship is designed to attract candidates from a broad range of racial, ethnic, economic, age and geographical diversity, as well as candidates with disabilities. The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is accepting applications for the 2018 VOICES program, open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. The program is August 5-11 during the 2018 AAJA National Convention in Houston. Students will be mentored by professional journalists and will be expected to produce and complete news assignments at the 2018 convention. Visit AAJA VOICES for more information. Scholarships and contests

Deadlines are approaching for the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, which
provides support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college and university level. The program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students' schools. Feb. 15 is the deadline to enter the Kansas Association of Broadcasters' Student Broadcast Awards competition. Get more information or enter here.

Students who are interested in getting involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community are encouraged to apply for the 2018-19 AAF-KC Foundation Scholarship. Winners will receive: Financial assistance of $1,500 per year; a mentor; free membership in AAF-KC and AAF National; and free admission to every AAF-KC event, excluding the American Advertising Awards . The deadline for entries has been extended to Feb. 6 for the Great Plains Journalism Awards, a competition that honors the best work done by journalists and photographers from an eight-state region published in newspapers, magazines, blogs and media websites. Get the details.

The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is open to all women enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at the University of Kansas who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and who demonstrate financial need. Deadline is March 1. Learn more here. 
 
KU's Student Employee of the Year committee is now accepting nominations for the 2017-2018 award. This award was established to recognize student employees who embody service, excellence, dedication, and whose academic achievements remain stellar. Deadline is Feb. 7. Learn more here.

Undergraduate and graduate journalism students of Greek American heritage may apply for annual $5,000 scholarships in memory of Peter Agris , the late founder and publisher of The Hellenic Chronicle. Deadline is March 1.  Get the details.

Alumni update
Jack Nixon, 1972 J-School graduate, has been awarded the National Sports Media Association Sportscaster of the Year award for the state of New Mexico. Nixon is the play-by-play announcer for New Mexico State University athletics and is in his 38th season with the Aggies.This is the third time Nixon has earned national sportscaster of the year recognition after earning the same accolade in 1980 and 2013.
