Summer Camps Catalog Released Today
I know it is only February, and summer seems like a distant dream, but, here at Lakehill, summer camp preparations are in full swing! Calendars are being set; camp descriptions are being finalized; and the Lakehill Summer Camps staff is busy planning a summer full of fun and adventure at both our newly enhanced Main Campus and the Environmental Science Center.

As this process unfolds, a single thought keeps coming back to me: I wish I were a kid again!

This year's camp lineup looks fabulous! STEM, Community Connections, LEGO Engineering, Destination Dallas, and other perennial favorites are all lined up and ready to go, but it's the newest camps that have me really excited!

Making Mosaics brings the most popular trend in crafting to Lakehill. Campers will explore paper and tile mosaics, creating patterns and scenes one colorful piece at a time. The Chicken Coop for our younger campers builds on one of kindergarten's favorite activities, hatching real chicken eggs! Campers will get to see and touch live chickens across their life cycle, from egg to hen, as they learn more about life on the farm. Design, Build, and Destroy is a hands-on look at engineering as campers learn about the most stable ways to build structures, then test their creation's ability to withstand catastrophic force. Will their designs have what it takes to stay standing, or will they cave under the pressure? And then there's Eek! Bugs!, the camp I would have signed up for first as a kid. Campers will learn to collect, identify, and pin insects, spiders, and other arthropods at this creepy crawly camp at Lakehill's Environmental Science Center.

Take a look at our just-released  Summer Camps Guide. Camp registration goes live on February 24. And, sorry...these camps are only for kids!

Tall Texans
On February 9, Lakehill's third grade students stepped into a museum. Not as visitors, but this time as the exhibits themselves.

To culminate a unit on influential figures in Texas history, students had the unique opportunity to bring the person that they had researched to life, complete with amazing costumes, backdrops, and props. Students wrote their own speeches which they presented to a large audience in the auditorium.

Legends from the pages of Texas history books, including Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, Mirabeau B. Lamar, and Scott Joplin filled the auditorium stage and aisles. One by one, they shared their stories and their contributions to Texas.

"We were so impressed with our students' abilities to bring these historical figures of Texas to life," said third grade teacher Kelly Curtis. "They eloquently portrayed the successes and hardships of their characters' lives, and they certainly looked the part with their elaborate costumes and detailed backdrops. Seeing our students in action quickly reminds us what a beloved Lakehill tradition this project is."

"It was a wonderful celebration of Texas History," said third grade teacher Rochelle Rasheed . "We are proud of the students for their hard work and grateful to the parents for their support!"

Middle School Musical
Middle School Musical Theatre students will bring Annie Jr. to the Lakehill stage on Friday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m.

Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, with a beloved book and score by Tony Award-winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, Annie Jr. features everyone’s favorite little redhead in her first adventure.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie (played by Ella Berry) charms everyone's hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan (played by Dasha Ramey). Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, finding a new home and family with billionaire Oliver Warbucks (played by Will Gorman), his personal secretary, Grace Farrell (played by Aleena Wallace), and a lovable mutt named Sandy (played by Luke Williams).

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:

NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Lovely Lopez
Lovely Lopez has attended Lakehill for thirteen years, making her a "lifer." While at Lakehill, Lovely has participated in Sisteens, musical theater, choir, softball, and Student Ambassadors. She is President of P.A.S.F., as well as being a captain in both cheer and volleyball. She is also a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Math Honor Society. She was most recently voted Homecoming Queen. One of Lovely’s favorite memories at Lakehill was the performing arts trip her junior year to New York City. She described it as, “the best week of my entire life.”

Lovely's favorite classes have been those in math and A.P. Psychology. Her interest in those classes has led to her plan to major in either developmental or cognitive psychology. Lovely has applied to Southwestern University, University of Colorado Boulder, St. Edwards University, Austin College, University of Kansas, and Texas Christian University, among others. She hopes to become a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Her family inspires her the most. Her family and friends have had the most impact in her life. Lovely encourages and tells young Warriors, “It is so important to believe in yourself.” She is excited to see what adventures and success will await her next year.

Basketball

Middle School Boys (IAA) Basketball
Eighth graders Alex Dondis and Mitchell Crow were selected for the IAA All-Star game, representing the North team on February 8, at Fairhill. Although the North lost, 45-31, both Warriors contributed to their team, with Crow scoring eight points, including a three-pointer, and Dondis adding four.

Varsity Girls Basketball
The Varsity Girls Basketball team wrapped up their season with a victory over Dallas Cristo Rey at home, 41-12.  Judy Zhu, who had seven rebounds in the game, was recognized during Senior Night.

The Warriors played smothering defense, holding Cristo Rey to only 12 points for the entire game. Offensively, the Warriors were led by Krista Carlson with 16 points, six rebounds, six assists, and eight steals, while  Liz Blanchard sank two three-pointers. Zuri Williams led the defense with 14 rebounds. The Lady Warriors finished with a season record of 10 wins and 15 losses, just one place away from a playoff spot.

"This team really came together during the second half of our district schedule and played extremely well," said Head Coach Rob Vaughn. "They won four games and took some of the playoff teams to the limit. A lot of young players got some valuable experience this season. The future is looking bright for the Girls Basketball program.'

Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity Boys Basketball team ended their season on February 9, with an impressive 52-28 win over Cristo Rey. The Warriors were led in scoring and rebounding by Gerard Franklin who contributed 21 points.

The Warriors doubled their district and total team wins from last year, just missing a playoffs spot. It was also Senior Night for Lakehill's two seniors, Franklin and Toni Perez-Stark, who spent four years with the team. "Their contributions will continue to impact the program for years to come," said Head Coach Bradley Neyland.

Crew
Lakehill seventh grader Margaret Henderson, rowing with Dallas United Crew, brought home the bronze medal in the Women's Middle School division at the annual S.W.E.A.T. Indoor Regatta. Held on February 3, at Dallas Jesuit, this year's event featured top athletes from around the region vying for a chance to compete in the March world championship event.

Lakehill rowers will kick-off the spring racing season on February 18, in Austin, at the Lady Bird Invitational.
