Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to provide you with an update on the upcoming provincially-mandated "Student voices on sexual violence" census survey set to launch this month.

As you may know, the Ontario government has contracted a research consulting firm (CCI Research) to conduct this survey on its behalf.  The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, together with Institutional Research and Planning, have been the main university points of contact for this project. A small internal group consisting of Chris Conway (Institutional Research & Planning), Ann Tierney (Vice-Provost & Dean of Student Affairs) Corinna Fitzgerald (Assistant Dean of Student Affairs), Barb Lotan (Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator), and AMS VP Palmer Lockridge worked with the research firm and the government throughout the review of the survey and the survey administration preparation process.

The group, along with other universities and colleges, had the opportunity to provide feedback on an early version of the survey. The survey was substantially revised and it has since been pilot tested, including at Seneca College and Trent University.

A few points:
  • The public survey website is now live
  • Ethics review approval has been granted.
  • The survey is scheduled to be released to University students on (or about) Monday, February 26th and be open until March 26th.
  • The survey invitation signed by Vice-Provost & Dean of Student Affairs Ann Tierney, AMS President Jennifer Li and SGPS President Adam Grotsky will be sent by CCI to all full-time students (undergraduate and graduate).
  • The survey results will be analyzed by CCI between April 1 and June 30th and that sector wide data will be made available.
The focus now is on communicating with students, leading up to the survey launch date (February 26th), and we are working with university communications to coordinate this effort.  CCI has developed graphics, messages, and draft communications, for use by colleges and universities, and communication with students began the week of February 5.

The university expects our advance communications, and the survey itself, could cause some students to reach out for support. You may see an increase in student demand for your services related to the survey in February and March.  Even though you may not be in a direct role of providing support to students regarding sexualized violence, it is important to realize the survey may have an impact on students and you may see this in your day-to-day interactions. Please familiarize yourself with this important information. Also, please visit the survey website and there is a FAQ page for students.

Barb Lotan (x36330), our Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator at Queen's in the Human Rights office, can be contacted in the event you are dealing with a student in distress. For additional resources and contacts please visit the Human Rights Office website
