A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:
Ted is recuperating from a medical procedure so I am authoring Email Express this week in his absence. As I preview this edition of Email Express, I am always struck by the many significant student accomplishments which we try to include, as well as information which has important connections to public education and Lovejoy ISD. There is no doubt the success of our students was a key reason why Lovejoy was selected as the "Best School District" in the Allen American Readers Choice Awards.
In Lovejoy, we enjoy a wonderful partnership with the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools (FLS). As you know, the FLS raises funds each year to fund teacher grants which will enhance the education of students in Lovejoy and assist LISD with the budget cuts we have experienced from school finance legislation passed in Austin. Part of the process for teacher grants being awarded in May is for representatives from each of our schools to serve on the Invest in Excellence committees. The Invest in Excellence committees review the grant submissions and rank order them based on the enhanced learning which could occur and the number of students who could be positively impacted. Both the Elementary/Intermediate and Secondary Invest in Excellence committees met this week to rank order the grant submissions and will now eagerly await the success of the FLS fundraising with the hope that these grants will be funded for the upcoming school year. Thank you to the efforts of the FLS and for the generosity of the entire community for helping to make the teacher grants a reality.
As a reminder, this Friday and upcoming Monday are student holidays in Lovejoy, so please enjoy the long weekend.

Lovejoy High School Band, Choir and Orchestra students left for San Antonio this morning to compete at the State level. We send our best wishes to these talented students as they represent Lovejoy at this stage of competition in the performing arts.

Lovejoy Swimming
The Swim Team is preparing to head to the 5A State Championship meet this week at the University of Texas. The Leopards qualified a record 8 individual swim and 3 relays, including the first 2 boys' relays in program history. The Leopards will compete this Friday and Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

Lovejoy Girls Basketball
The Lady Leopards traveled to Wills Point to take on the Lady Tigers of Mt. Pleasant High School in a Bi-District rematch. The Lady Leopards defeated the Lady Tigers 49-27 and now advance to the Area round of the State 5-A Girls Basketball playoffs against the Prosper Lady Eagles. The game is this Friday at 7:00 PM at Plano Senior High School. We hope to see you there as we support our Lady Leopards in their quest for a long State Championship run.

Early Voting - March Primaries

The Texas Primaries are fast approaching, as March 6th is Election Day. Early voting begins on February 20th. House District 89 has been represented by Representative Jodie Laubenberg. Jodie is not running for re-election; therefore, we will have new representation. The same is true for Senate District 8, which was held by Senator Van Taylor who is not running for re-election. I encourage you to research the choices and vote for the candidate you believe will best represent HD 89 and SD 8.

The first annual Lovejoy STEM Festival will be held at Lovejoy High School on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This will be a great opportunity to come see, do, and learn all about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Lovejoy ISD. The STEM Council has planned various guest speakers, demonstrations, competitions, Makerspace opportunities, and robotics experiences for a fun, engaging day for students and adults of Lovejoy and beyond.
While we are still finalizing details for the day, we would appreciate your support and participation. If you work in the STEM fields and are interested in volunteering or being a guest speaker, please help us make this a wonderful day of learning and fun.

LISD Receives Readers' Choice Award
|
Lovejoy ISD received "Best Public School" in the Readers' Choice awards hosted by the AllenAmerican.
|
Congratulations to Alex Pedersen (LHS Freshman) who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He coordinated with Lifepath Systems to build 4 benches and 4 planter boxes to be used at a new Mental Health Crisis Center in McKinney. Together with Troop 5320, Alex built, painted, and delivered the benches and boxes.

Congratulations to Lovejoy Elementary 4th graders Jocelyn Chapman and Lauren Perry who raised $400 to help families in need. The girls sold their handmade jewelry and t-shirts, donating all proceeds to the ACO (Allen Community Outreach).

Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual Taste of Fairview will be presented by Estate Life Magazine in partnership with the Allen Fairview Chamber, Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club, and the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools.

Denim and Diamonds - Lone Starry Night
April 7th
Through your generosity and support, the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools awarded grants totaling $451,100 to teachers for use in their classrooms this year. The Foundation is funded primarily from Annual Appeal and the Denim and Diamonds (D&D) Gala and Auction. The Foundation's goal this year is to cover D&D costs with sponsorships prior to the night of the event so all monies spent at the event go directly to fund classroom grants.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host a raffle for three great prizes, which includes:
- $2500 VISA gift card - Donated by Owens Realtors
- EZ Go Golf cart - Completely Remodeled and Refurbished Model 2014 TXT-PDS with 2014 upbody with flip seating, new batteries, tires and LED head/tail lights. New factory-painted, flame-red body. EC Custom Carts - value $5,000
- Arcade Game Table - Designed like original arcade table from the 80s. Table can be customized, featuring officially licensed graphics of favorite college, pro team, etc. - value $4,400

LHS Band
The LHS band Ensemble competition will be held on Saturday, February 24th at the Lovejoy High School Band Hall. Best wishes to our band ensembles.

LHS Orchestra
The Lovejoy High School Orchestra hosted the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest this past Saturday. Approximately 200 performers competed from Region 25. Lovejoy High School Orchestra brought home 48 medals for first division ratings, with 9 State-qualifying soloists and 4 State-qualifying ensembles. Fine Arts Staff
Many of our Fine Arts staff also work as professionals in their respective industries. Currently Anne Tracy, Musical Specialist at Puster Elementary and LISD Elementary Specials Coordinator, and Kelly D'Souza, LHS Assistant Choir Director are sopranos in the prestigious Dallas Symphony Chorus, which is the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Tracy has been a member of the Chorus for 18 years, and this marks the 2nd year for Ms. DeSouza. The Dallas Symphony Chorus is celebrating 40 years this season. Please

Lovejoy Baseball
The Lovejoy Baseball Teams began action for their upcoming 2018 season this past Thursday as they scrimmaged Richardson Pearce, winning 5-2. The Leopards then scrimmaged the Red Hawks of Frisco Liberty on Friday, winning 9-4. The Leopards will take on Allen and Frisco Lone Star later this week in continued scrimmages in preparation for the 2018
season.

Lovejoy Boys Basketball
The Lovejoy Boys Basketball team traveled to Highland Park High School to take on the Scots in a 15-5A District contest. The Leopards fell short to the Scots 61-43. The loss dropped the Leopards 15-5A District Record to 6-7 and leaves them in the fourth place slot for the State Playoffs, one game ahead of the West Mesquite Wranglers. The Leopards celebrated Senior Night last night against the previously mentioned Wranglers for a spot in the UIL State Playoffs. The Leopards fell short to the Wranglers 47-39. The loss places the Leopards in a tie for fourth place with West Mesquite. The two teams will play again this Friday at JJ Pearce High School at 7:00 PM for a playoff game which will determine the team who will represent District 15-5A in the State UIL Boys Basketball playoffs. We hope you will make plans to support our Leopards.
The JV Black Leopards defeated the Wranglers 62-46 to end their season on a positive note. The Leopards finished the season with a 14-10 season record and 11-3 district record.
The Freshmen Leopards completed their season with a 77-40 victory over the Wranglers. The win completed the sweep in district 15-5A, for a perfect 14-0 record and the district
championship.
The freshmen season record was a very impressive 27-4.

Lovejoy Golf
The Boys Varsity Black and Red teams competed this past week at the Rockwall Golf Club, the site for the 15-5A District and Region II Golf Tournaments. The Black team finished 17th, and the Red team completed the tournament in 10th place. The JV1 boys competed Tuesday at Heritage Ranch in the Bulldog Invitational. The boys shot a team total 381 to finish fourth.

Lovejoy Powerlifting
The Lovejoy powerlifting team traveled to Fort Worth to compete in the Castleberry Meet. The Leopards finished second from a field of nine teams. Leading lifters for the Leopards were Brock Prengler, Tyler Beildeman and Kade Ashley who won the 242-pound class with an astonishing 1475-pound total. Kade was also voted the "Lifter of the Meet". The Leopards will be off this next week and will have their last meet for those not qualifying for regionals on February 24th at Keller Central.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
The Lovejoy Boys Soccer team defeated the North Forney Falcons last night at Leopard Stadium 8-0 and now look to take on the Mesquite Poteet Pirates this Friday in Mesquite. The winner of this game will take an early district lead in the standings. Good luck to our Boys Soccer team.
The JV Boys also defeated the Falcons of North Forney 6-1. They will travel to Mesquite to take on the Pirates with kickoff scheduled at 5:30 PM.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Lady Leopards fell to the North Forney Falcons last night in Forney 3-0. The Lady Leopards played tough all game, giving up two late goals for the loss. The Lady Leopards will be home this Friday to take on the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 PM.
The JV Lady Leopards also fell to the Lady Falcons 1-0 in a tough, close game. The JV will be home this Friday against the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet. Game time is 5:15 PM.

Lovejoy Softball
The Lady Leopard Softball team traveled to Lake Dallas earlier this week for the last scrimmage of the new season, defeating the Lady Falcons 21-2. The Lady Leopards open their season tomorrow and through the weekend at the Carrollton Tournament of Champions.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Spring Tennis season continued with a match this past Friday and Saturday in the McKinney Invitational Tournament. The team was led by the Girls Doubles team of Samantha Hayward and Daniela Benigno who finished as semi-finalist. The team was also led by the Mixed Doubles team of Brandon Su and Polly Roth who won 3 out of 4 matches. The Varsity Team will have a bye this week. The JV Team will travel to Frisco tomorrow to compete in the Frisco JV Tournament.

Lovejoy Track
The Boys and Girls Track team continue to train for their next Track Meet scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at Ron Poe Stadium in McKinney for the annual McKinney Boyd Broncos Relays.

Lovejoy Wrestling
The men's wrestling team wrestled in a tough 9-5A district tournament last week and advanced 9 of 11 wrestlers to the regional tournament in Bryan. The Leopard Men finished 4th overall out of a tough, 10-team district. Senior James Ayers led the men's team becoming district champion.
The women's team advanced all five wrestlers to the regional tournament in Bryan. The women were led by Junior Morgan Elvin and Sophomore Alex LeFort, both winning district championship titles.
Good luck to the men and women wrestlers at the regional tournament this weekend in Bryan.

The referral window for gifted and talented services is open for students in grades 1-12 through March 31st.

The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. Lovejoy Men's Soccer Future Leopard Night
February 20th
The Lovejoy Men's soccer team will host Future Leopard Night on Tuesday, February 20th, when they take on Royse City with a 5:30 PM kick off for JV and a 7:30 PM kick off for Varsity. During halftime of the JV game, the first 15 future Leopards who score a goal will receive prizes. Additionally, there will be prizes for all future Leopards. Participants will take the field with Varsity players for the National Anthem. After the JV halftime events, players will be available to answer questions and sign posters which will be provided at the game, as well as soccer balls which future Leopards bring to the game. This event is for all elementary, intermediate and middle school students.

WSMS Choir
February 20th
The WSMS Choir will present its Pre-UIL Concert and Sight-Reading concert on Tuesday, February 20th at 7:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School. The concert is free and will help prepare the students for their UIL competition. The WSMS choirs will compete on March 6th and 7th at McKinney Boyd High School.

Lovejoy Visual Arts Spotlight Exhibition
February 20th-March 6th
The Lovejoy Visual Arts (LJVA) Department invites you to attend the 1st Annual LJVA Spotlight Exhibition on display in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery from February 20th through March 6th. This exhibition, featuring 47 selected works from over 170 submissions and juried by a field of 6 graduating seniors from the art program, is the first show of its kind featured in the gallery. Work selected for the LJVA Spotlight Exhibition was submitted from every level and form of study within the visual arts program as a showcase of the breadth of approach and personal voice found in LJVA studios. This show's direction and curation are the work of AP Studio Drawing Seniors Tad Greenwald and Emma Wigginton.
Please join us for the opening reception in the gallery at 6:00 PM on February 20th. If you are unable to attend the opening, please feel free to come and explore the gallery during school hours from February 20th through March 6th.

WSMS Theatre - One Act Play Performances

The Willow Springs Middle School Theatre department presents I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti. Details are as follows:

Location: WSMS Cafetorium
This Holocaust play centers around Raja, one of the children who survived Terezin, and the other children trapped in the Ghetto. A memory play, Raja recalls the events that led her to be the confident woman she is now. This play was based off true stories of these children's lives, based on actual drawings and poems that were buried in hopes of someone finding them after the war.
This 40 minute drama is the WSMS theatre department's UIL competition piece for One Act Play, which will take place on March 3rd in Grand Prairie.
Each night at our home show, there will be a guest critic to provide feedback for the cast. The audience is welcome to stay, but may leave after the performance if they choose.

LHS Jazz Band and A Capella Present

Come sing and dance the night away with the Lovejoy High School Jazz Band and Choir at 7:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School commons area on Friday, February 23rd. This concert will feature vocal and band standards from the 1940s and beyond. Admission is free. Coffee and desert items may be purchased separately. This event is open to all.

24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

Back by popular demand, the Lovejoy Gifted Association is partnering with the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) for the annual LGA Rocket Project. The Rocket Project is an extracurricular STEM activity at which your child builds a rocket one evening, then launches it another day, all with the assistance of the professionals from DARS.
The Lovejoy Gifted Association is a non-profit organization supporting Gifted and Talented programs across all schools in Lovejoy ISD. The Rocket Project is a fundraiser with proceeds directly benefiting Lovejoy students. If you have questions, contact

Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. This year's initiative is to bring the Lovejoy community together as a whole to promote a sense of unity and caring. We hope you will save the date of April 6th and join us for Relay for Life.

Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may
click here
to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10. Michael Tuck - Class of 2011
The following was recently spotted on Facebook regarding Michael Tuck, Class of 2011. We are #lovejoyproud.
#MusicianMonday! Guess what?! We have another new guitarist we'd like you to meet, and his name also happens to be...Michael! Please meet Airman First Class Michael Tuck! A1C Tuck is from Dallas, TX, and has been a member of the band for three months! He received a bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas where he studied jazz guitar. A1C Tuck is a talented musician and has toured with country bands all over Texas. Interesting fact: A1C Tuck is an Eagle Scout and in his free time enjoys playing pedal steel. Welcome to the band!
