Dear Friend:

Do teens need a sense of purpose in their lives?  Clare Ansberry in The Wall Street Journal answers - Yes.  In her words, "Teens with a sense of purpose do better in school, are more resilient and healthier.  They are also only a minority."  Only about 20% of teens are considered purposeful.

And, what is purposeful?  Something that is meaningful and helps others.  A personal passion becomes purposeful when it benefits others.  A good illustration is Mikayla Davis, a high school junior who has written, produced and directed school musicals to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

William Damon, director of the Center on Adolescence at Stanford University, is the author of "The Path to Purpose:  How Young People Find Their Calling in Life."  Even though a minority of teens have a purpose in their lives, what each had in common was a role model who was either a parent, teacher, or friend.

I can identify with this in my lif!e.  As a teenager my parents were my role models as givers.  Is it a surprise that I chose as a profession helping others to become generous givers themselves?

Jake and Max Klein, twins in New Jersey, at 7 years of age, learned about the needs of others in homeless shelters.  They worked with their parents to raise money for the homeless.  Later as part of their bar mitzvah project they created a website call Kids That Do Good.

I thank God that as a teen my parents taught me about philanthropy.  It became my life

Sincerely,

Douglas M. Lawson, Ph.D.

"Effective philanthropy requires a lot of time and creativity - the same kind of focus and skills that building a business requires." - - Bill Gates
STAR POWER HELPS UNICEF GALA RAISE $1.3 MILLION - - Thanks to the star power from Rob and Sheryl Lowe and Sarah Ferguson, the Great Plains Regional Office of UNICEF USA grossed more than $1.3 million at the inaugural UNICEF gala in Dallas.  "I may never get the Golden Globe, but I got this!", Lowe said after the charity presented the Global Philanthropist Award to him and his wife for their nine years of support.  The Charity also honored Kimberly-Clark, which has donated $15 million to the organization over 15 years, according to chairman and CEO Tom Falk.  The child focused charity works in 190 nations and territories at the request of their governments.  Last year, it also helped in Houston, where more than 1 million children were affected by Hurricane Harvey, as well as in Puerto Rico. - - Holly Haber, The Dallas Morning News, February 7, 2018.  Read more.
GIVING TO COLLEGES JUMPS 6.3% TO RECORD $43.6 BILLION IN FISCAL 2017 - - Donations to U.S. colleges and universities jumped to a record $43.6 billion, thanks to last year's stock-market rally and renewed charitable activity from alumni. Giving increased by 6.3% in the fiscal year that ended June 30, or 3.7% adjusted for inflation, according to the Council for Aid to Education's annual Voluntary Support of Education survey. That included five gifts of at least $100 million, compared with two such megagifts the prior year. The tax overhaul passed by Congress late last year may change trends in charitable giving, including to colleges and universities. Many individuals increased their giving right before 2017 closed out, but the new law, which doubles the standard deduction, reduces the tax incentive for making donations. Harvard University again topped the list of fundraisers in 2017, with $1.28 billion raised. Stanford University brought in $1.13 billion, while Cornell University rounded out the top three with $743.5 million. - - Melissa Korn, The Wall Street Journal, February 7, 2018.  Read more.
DALLAS MORNING NEWS CHARITIES DRIVE RAISES $1.25 MILLION - - This year's Dallas Morning News Charities campaign raised slightly more than last year's drive, bringing in more than $1.25 million from roughly 1,550 donors to aid North Texans who are hungry, homeless and unemployed. The annual drive, which began in November at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas , marked more than three decades of raising money for local charities. This year's campaign benefited 20 nonprofits that feed the hungry; house homeless families and children; and help others pay the bills. "We are extremely proud of how the community, our employees and our charity partners have responded during this campaign season," said Richard Jones, former chairman of The Dallas Morning News Charities board who oversaw this year's drive. "There were several opportunities to give this past year, and your generosity and willingness to take action came through each time, allowing us to exceed our prior year's results."
This year's campaign began with more than $545,000 already in the organization's coffers -- the largest fundraising kickoff amount in the Charities' 32-year history. It included a $100,000 donation from an anonymous donor, along with support from the J.L. Williams Foundation, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, the Hertich Estate Fund at the Community Foundation of Texas, 2017 North Texas Giving Day, The Dallas Foundation, employees of The Dallas Morning News and The Murrell Foundation. - - Nanette Light, The Dallas Morning News, February 3, 2018.  Read more.
CHARITY FUNDS TAKE OFF AS TAX LAW RESHAPES GIVING
- - Americans late last year donated much money into charitable-giving vehicles known as donor-advised funds, which allow immediate tax deductions but gradual distributions to nonprofits-a sign of ways the new tax law could reshape how Americans donate money for years to come. The goal was to make donations before the new year, when, for tax purposes, giving became less advantageous for many households. People turned to donor-advised funds run by local nonprofits or those affiliated with big money-management firms. These funds allowed taxpayers to lock in deductions for 2017, then designate when and where to disburse the money. Fidelity Charitable, the largest donor-advised fund, added 22,000 accounts last year, nearly double its goal, pushing its total to 105,000. Donors created 3,200 new accounts at Vanguard Charitable in 2017, about double the 2016 total, while total contributions were up 16% for the year to $1.6 billion. More than 20% of Schwab Charitable's 45,000 accounts were started in the second half of 2017. The new tax law's treatment of deductions gives people more reasons to concentrate giving in certain years. But widespread bunching of contributions could make it difficult for charities to plan from year to year. - - Richard Rubin, The Wall Street Journal, February 2, 2018. Read more.
