MRD News:
Thank You for a Transformational Year
by Barbara Bynum, former MRD Board President

2017 has been a transformative year for the Montrose Recreation District.  Since its creation in 1956 the district has always worked hard to provide recreational opportunities to the community.   But 2017 was one for the record books! In January the new Community Recreation Center opened after years of planning and hard work.  On that first grand opening weekend, 11,000 people came through the front doors.  And today there are over 6,000 people with annual passes!

Soon after the CRC opened, MRD finished construction of pickleball courts, outdoor trails, fields, and climbing boulders as part of Phase 2 of the Master Plan. These additions were possible in large part because of a grant from GOCO (Great Outdoors Colorado), who invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help communities like ours build these important outdoor spaces.

And in December of this year, the remodeled Field House held its grand opening.  From 1987-2016 the building housed the indoor community pool.  But through creative thinking and significant upgrades, the building is now home to a beautiful indoor turf field.  I encourage you to stop by some evening and check it out.  It's a tremendous asset to our community.

And while these concrete and metal structures are certainly worth celebrating, I believe that the current environment of cooperation is the biggest win for our community.  When we work together we can accomplish amazing things.  It is an exciting time to be part of our community as we witness so many successful projects.  Whether these projects are large civic buildings or the creation of new small business, there are many reasons to celebrate.  But there are also more challenges and opportunities ahead.  We must continue to ask each other for help.  And we must continue to look for ways to say, "yes" when asked.  Individuals, organizations, business, and government cannot go at it alone.

And as a quick reminder, if you became a annual pass holder when the Recreation Center opened, now is the time to renew your pass.  The Winter/Spring Activity Guide was mailed to all area households earlier this month and registration is underway.  You can register in person, by phone, or online at MontroseREC.com.  Be sure to check out the exciting new programs offered at the Field House in addition to the programs at the Community Rec Center.

On a personal note, after seven years of working first on the MRD Citizen Task Force and then on the MRD Board of Directors, I have resigned from my role with the District.  When I was appointed to City Council in August I knew that I could not give both organizations the attention they deserved but I agreed to stay on through the MRD's 2018 budget process. One of the greatest responsibilities of board members is to approve and adopt the upcoming year's budget. At last week's board meeting we did just that.  In addition, the vacancy on the MRD board allows someone new to step forward with new ideas and new enthusiasm.  I look forward to working with them from my seat on City Council.  It is sad to say goodbye to the Rec District, but to work on behalf of the community has been an honor. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.  I look forward to new challenges and great things to come!

Happy 2018! It is time to make your New Year resolutions! Every year numerous people resolve to begin an exercise program and live a healthier lifestyle, but well-accepted statistics show that more than 50% of these people will drop out fewer than 6 months into the New Year. Since exercise consistency is a key component to getting results and fulfilling your resolutions, MRD has compiled the following tips to help you make and KEEP your resolutions.

1) Be realistic. Strive for goals that are attainable instead of something that will overwhelm you. This means making SMART goals (goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound).

2) Plan ahead. This means getting into the right mind set. Plan what goals you want to achieve each day, week, or month. Set realistic short- and long-term goals. Plan ahead for obstacles and decide how to handle them since temptations will arise. For instance, if you think you may be tempted to skip a workout or eat an unhealthy meal, decide in advance what you will do in these situations. This could involve calling a supportive friend or using determination and self-control to push past the temptation. Remind yourself what gets you closer to your goals and what does not.

3) Make a pros and cons list. It may help to write this list on paper and keep referring back to it to keep your motivation and your resolve. Write down WHY you want to stick with your resolution and WHAT the negatives would be if you fail to keep your resolutions. Keep this list in a place you can see it daily and monitor success.

4) Talk about it. Let your friends and family know what your goals are and ask for their support. For greater chances of success, find a friend or family member who shares similar goals and decide to help each other reach them. Peer support can be a powerful motivator during the times you need an extra push to stay on track.

5) Reward yourself. Celebrate your successes by treating yourself to something you enjoy that does not conflict with your resolution. For instance, if your goal is to eat healthy, do not reward yourself with junk food. Instead, reward yourself with new fitness clothing, going to a movie, or finding a new healthy recipe to try.

6) Track your progress. Keep track of the small successes. Short-term goals are easier to meet and each new accomplishment will keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on the full amount of weight you want to lose, focus on the first few pounds. Keep a journal to stay on track as you move towards your long-term goals.

7) Do not beat yourself up. The main reason people give up is that they get discouraged or they make a mistake that derails their entire effort. Remember that we may not do everything perfectly and will likely have setbacks along the way. Do your best each day and if you fall off track, be determined to get back on track the next day and keep going!

8) Stick to it. Experts often say that it takes 3 weeks for a new activity to become a habit and 6 months for it to become part of your life. Lifestyle changes do not take place overnight. The important thing is to be patient and persistent as you create healthy habits and positive life changes.

9) Keep trying! If you feel like you are running out of steam by February, do not despair. Start over! Recommit to your resolutions in 24-hour increments. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will build upon each other and help you get back on track before you know it! For additional motivation, join the MRD's February Commit to Live Fit Challenge (also featured in this newsletter).

10) Let MRD help! MRD has 18 regular instructors, 6 Personal Trainers and multiple substitute instructors passionate about exercise and healthy lifestyles who want to help you on your fitness journey. Find an exercise class or classes that you enjoy, or schedule a consultation with a Personal Trainer and let us help you commit to a healthy and active 2018!
