Lawmakers Want $166 Million for Rail, Roads, Bridges on top of $2B Already Budgeted

Increasing the gas tax by 23 cents a gallon was supposed to resolve the continued lack of funding for state infrastructure projects, raising $2 billion a year over eight years. But for the second time since lawmakers renewed the state Transportation Trust Fund, they are going to the well again, asking for a supplemental appropriation.
The Assembly Budget Committee has approved a total of $166 million in supplemental TTF funding that would be added to the $2 billion that's already been budgeted for road, bridge, and rail improvements during the 2018 fiscal year, which runs through the end of June.

Improvements in traffic flow and fuel consumption are boosted when even a few autonomous vehicles are immersed in bulk traffic, according to research by a Rutgers University-Camden scholar, Benedetto Piccoli, and a team of resear
chers who recently presented their findings to policymakers in Washington, D.C.
The multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in traffic flow theory, control theory, robotics, cyber-physical systems, and transportation engineering demonstrated to policymakers how autonomous vehicles in their National Science Foundation-funded study helped to prevent traffic jams and can dissipate them when they appear.
Protecting a New World of 3D-Printed Products

The number of 3D-printed, critical components grows each day. They make their way into vehicles, aircraft, medical devices, prostheses, human bodies, and military applications. With that increase comes more opportunities for bad actors to hack the additive manufacturing industry, potentially jeopardizing the products meant to improve our health and safety.
So far, no major hacks have been reported in the emerging industry, says Raheem Beyah, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
New Spending Measure Has Big Potential Infrastructure Boost

Construction and engineering companies find lots of good news in a newly enacted budget and appropriations package that keeps federal agencies open until late March, provides $89 billion for post-disaster relief and rebuilding and also holds out the prospect of an additional $20 billion in infrastructure funding over the next two years.
Final congressional approval didn't come until the early hours of Feb. 9, when the Senate passed the measure, 71-28, and the House cleared it by a 240-186 vote.
Rowan first N.J. university to send satellite into space as part of NASA program

They have been developing a CubeSat research nanosatellite, weighing less than three pounds, as part of NASA's seventh round of its CubeSat Launch Initiative. Rowan is the only college or university in New Jersey ever selected for the program.
The Rowan CubeSat, called MemSat, will evaluate a newer type of memory technology to determine whether it is better than the most common technology used today, comparing the behavior of memristor memory devices against standard, silicon-based memory technologies to determine potential advantages and/or disadvantages of memristors for space and other applications.

Now your critical role in securing the health and safety of the public is under increasing scrutiny. Over the last few years, there has been a growing movement by some governors and legislators to target the regulation of occupations and professions under the guise of cutting government interference and boosting state economies.
NSPE, which was founded on the importance of licensing to protect the public from unqualified practitioners, sees a very real threat. In partnership with state societies, NSPE is actively monitoring the situation and responding to those threats whenever and wherever they arise.
