Celebrate Valentine's Day in the
King's Chapel 18th Century Crypt
If you're dying for something different to do this Valentine's Day season then join King's Chapel's History Program on a candlelit crypt tour.
Discover how Bostonians mourned the deaths of loved ones throughout history, walk among the 21 tombs beneath the chapel and learn about the historic couples laid to rest within them.

ArtsEmerson Presents 'Torrey Pines' Starting Feb. 14th
ArtsEmerson will be showing "Torrey Pines," a stop-motion animated film about a queer, coming-of-age adventure by Clyde Peterson, opening Feb. 14th at the Paramount Center.
The film is based on Peterson's true-life story growing up in the 90s, when being transgender wasn't something you could look up on the internet.

History in Hot Water: The Tea is Brewing Program at Old South Meeting House Feb. 14th
How do we talk about race, gender and power when presenting 1770s politics to students and the public? Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) education staff and a group of teachers-in-training will present a condensed version of OSMH's interactive school program, Tea is Brewing, as a springboard for discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 14th.
This program reenacts the December 16, 1773 meeting that led to the Boston Tea Party. How can educators and participants give voice to African Americans, Native Americans, women, and others who were excluded from the tea tax meetings? Join OSMH to consider how to present inclusive, hands-on history for all.
This program is made possible with funding from the Lowell Institute. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by clicking here. This event starts at 6:30 pm.

February Staycation Activities at the Hyatt Regency Boston
The Hyatt Regency Boston (1 Avenue de Lafayette) is offering several activities for school vacation week that are open to everyone to attend.
Cookies for a Cause will be on Monday, Feb. 19th from 2 to 5 pm. There will be homemade cookies and hot chocolate at Terry's Corner and all donations collected will go to support the Julie Fund.
YogaHub will be hosting Family Friendly Yoga on Tuesday, Feb. 20th from 5:45 to 6:45 pm. All levels of yoga are welcome. See the front desk for the class location.
YogaHub is also hosting Pose & Pour Adult Yoga on Wednesday, Feb. 21st from 5:45 to 6:45 pm. Participants will receive a complimentary drink ticket to use at the Lobby Bar.

'Waitress' Opens at Boston Opera House Feb. 20th
The national tour of the Broadway musical "Waitress" opens at the Boston Opera House on Tuesday, Feb. 20th.
"'Waitress' tells the story of Jenna -- a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life," according to bostonbroadway.com.

Children's Winter Fest Returns to
Boston Common Feb. 21st
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department's Annual Children's Winter Fest returns to the Boston Common on Wednesday, Feb. 21st.
Among the attractions include a 45-foot long Toboggan Tunnel with twin roller coaster lanes, a 30-foot high inflatable Everest Climb 'N Slide and the Snow Mazing Maze. This free event is from 10 am to 3 pm.
This event is in partnership with the Highland Street Foundation, which is sponsoring a week-long winter camp at the Boston Common Frog Pond with free skating and rentals for all ages from Feb. 19th through Feb. 23rd. Please click here for more info. |

'The Baker Chocolate Company: A Sweet History' at Old South Meeting House
Feb. 22nd
Local historian Anthony Sammarco will detail the delicious saga of the Dorchester-based Baker Chocolate Company in "The Baker Chocolate Company: A Sweet History" at the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) on Thursday, Feb. 22nd.
Sammarco will discuss Dr. James Baker who, in 1765, met chocolate maker John Hannon, and together the duo built America's oldest chocolate manufacturer. Here about the famed La Belle Chocolatiers advertising campaign, cacao bean smuggling sparked by Revolutionary War blockades and more.

National Society of Colonial Dames of America's 'Overcoming Uncivil Dialogue: New Lessons from Puritans' at
Suffolk Law School Feb. 24th
The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is holding a public lecture on "Overcoming Uncivil Dialogue: New Lessons from the Puritans" at Suffolk University's Law School (120 Tremont St., auditorium) on Saturday, Feb. 24th.
The program will feature Dr. Robert Allison, professor in the Department of History at Suffolk University, and Dr. Dale Kuehne, chair of the Department of Ethics, Economics and the Common Good at St. Anselm's College. A reception will follow the talk where Boston weekday Puritan dresses from 1635 of three socioeconomic classes hand-sewn by dame Ruby-Grace Miller will be displayed and contrasted with a Virginia gown of the same period.

King's Chapel Concert Series: Concerto! Feb. 25th
The 60th anniversary season of the King's Chapel Concert Series continues on Sunday, Feb. 25th with Concerto!
The works of Bach, Handel, Telemann and Schnizer will be performed by violinists Julia McKenzie and Katherine Winterstein, violist Susan Seeber, cellist Colleen McGary-Smith, bassist Scot Fitzsimmons and organist Heinrich Christensen.

Celebrate Black History Month with
The Freedom Trail Foundation's
African-American Patriots Tour
The Freedom Trail Foundation's acclaimed African-American Patriots Tour celebrates the African-American patriots who played a vital role in the start of the American Revolution in Boston. The tour is led by 18th-century costumed guides throughout Black History Month in February on Saturdays and Sundays.
Revolutionary figures such as Crispus Attucks, Phillis Wheatley, Prince Hall, Peter Salem and others are brought to life during these 90-minute walking tours while zigzagging through the Freedom Trail.

Tuesday Recitals at King's Chapel
King's Chapel (58 Tremont St.) offers public
recitals on Tuesdays at 12:15 pm. On Feb. 13th, the music of Monteverdi, Gluck and Handel will be performed in "A Baroque Valentine" with soprano Harriet Bridges, Sheila Beardslee playing the recorder and organist Robert Barney.
Recitals last between 30 and 40 minutes and feature a wide variety of musical genres and performing artists ranging from local students to traveling performers. The latest Griffin Museum of Photography exhibit, "Tree Talk," at the Lafayette City Center Passageway, debuted on Jan. 30th.

"In this exhibition called 'Tree Talk' the Griffin Museum of Photography brings together 66 photographers who converse with trees. The exhibit has been organized to flow as a narrative from the beginning to the end of the passageway. In this way the trees all talk to each other. We hope our audience enjoys the exhibition and that all of the trees give up their secrets to you," said Paula Tognarelli, executive director and curator of Griffin Museum of Photography.

This exhibit is through a partnership by the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Abbey Group and the Downtown Boston BID. This exhibit is in the Lafayette City Center Passageway
(between Macy's and the Hyatt Regency Boston) and

5 Historical Sites of
African-American History in Downtown
Boston
February is Black History Month and there are numerous locations in Downtown Boston with significant importance to the history of the U.S. and African-Americanism.
The African Meeting House (46 Joy St.), above, was built in 1806 and is the oldest black church still standing in the country. This historic site hosted speeches by Maria Stewart, Wendell Phillips, Sarah Grimke and Frederick Douglass. The New England Anti-Slavery Society was founded here by William Lloyd Garrison in 1832. It was a recruitment site for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in 1863. It is now the home of the Museum of African American History.
The Boston Common is the site of the Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, above. It is also the site where Massachusetts resident William H. Carney, who was a member of the 54th, became the first African-American patriot to receive a Medal of Honor. During the Battle of Fort Wagner, the color guard was shot, and despite being shot himself, Carney picked up the American flag and later said to his fellow soldiers, "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground!"
The Old Granary Burying Ground (Tremont and Bromfield streets) is the final resting place of famous African-American patriots such as Boston Massacre victim Crispus Attucks and likely, poet Phillis Wheatley.
The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) is where Phillis Wheatley attended religious services with her family, which greatly influenced her life. Wheatley was a precocious learner and was highly educated thanks to her family. She wrote poems about being a Christian and many other subjects and was first published at the age of 13, and, in 1773, she published a book of her poetry "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral." Wheatley was the first African-American, the first American slave and only the third American woman to publish a book of poems. A statue, seen above, of Wheatley commemorating her achievements and contributions was erected in the Old South Meeting House.
Outside of the Old State House (206 Washington St.), above, is the site of the Boston Massacre, where the first bloodshed happened in the American Revolution between the Redcoats and Colonists. Crispus Attucks was an escaped slave and sailor, and the first person killed at the Massacre. Attucks was considered a martyr for the American Revolution and became an inspirational figure to the Abolitionist Movement leading up the Civil War. |

Explorateur (186 Tremont St.) is offering a prix fixe menu on Valentine's Day with a choice of $65 or $100 per person. Also, on Feb. 13th from 6 to 8 pm, Explorateur is offering a Truffle Making Class with Executive Pastry Chef Lee Napoli, who will share tips and tricks on how to make the perfect chocolate truffle. Shoveling, Parking and More
Whether you're a property owner, a homeowner or a resident with a car it's important to know about shoveling and parking regulations, snow emergencies and more. The City of Boston has a resourceful webpage providing all necessary info
here, and below is important info to know for when the white stuff comes down.
Shoveling Info:

Property owners must:
- Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
- Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines. Also please remember to:
- Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
- Please clear any snow that may be blocking a handicap ramp, fire hydrant or catch basin.
- Don't leave snow or ice on stairways or fire escapes. All common means of exit must be clear in case of fire or another emergency.
What To Do With Your Car When It Snows:
During a snow emergency main roads need to be clear for plows and emergency vehicles. If you're parked on one of these main roads during a snow emergency, you may be ticketed and your vehicle may be towed. How do you know if you can't park on a street during a snow emergency? Check the signs posted on the street. Also, here is map of restricted roads due to a snow emergency.

Please also call the BID's dispatch line at 617-261-0066 to report sidewalks, handicapped ramps or other Downtown Crossing public ways that need to be shoveled. Our Ambassadors will be out in the snow 24 hours a day making sure the sidewalks are clear!

When you know severely cold weather is coming, remember to take steps to prepare. Please also check on your elderly or disabled neighbors, and take caution when using portable heating devices like space heaters. If you have an emergency please call 911.
