Clergy Reflection

From the Rector,

Happy New Year! Epiphany has had a productive and mission filled 2017.  This past year celebrated the successful work of the search and calling committees with the calling and installation of a new rector. The wardens, with the Interim Rectors, and the help of The Rev. Catriona, and The Rev. Tricia Lyons, were able to provide stable leadership for most of the year. As I have transitioned in as the Rector we have been able to focus on a number of things that had taken a back seat during the past few years. We now have a new group of lay volunteers who are licensed and trained to offer a variety of pastoral care needs. They meet regularly to pray for all the members of the congregation, and to pray for those who are sick and unable to make it to the church. They are also in the process of visiting all those who are unable to make it to church and would appreciate an Epiphany connection and the Eucharist. I too, have been making sure that I have been to visit those who are not able to come to church due to prolonged health issues.

We have voted in a new vestry and look forward to making their roles official with a liturgy of commissioning in February. The vestry is charged with, among other things, the fiduciary responsibility of the congregation. They will be spending a good deal of time analyzing the financial structure of the church. Also, looking at how we integrate a theology of year-round stewardship. To help with this a small group has been meeting with diocesan consultants around a financial strategic plan. This is a 16-18 month program that, hopefully, will move us closer to ministry goals that we plan to develop together throughout the year.

There are other things to anticipate as we begin this new year together. The choir will be lending their talents for a "hymn sing", visits to other church's and of course the summer trip to England. We will continue to determine what will be the best method for formation for both children and adults. And we plan to expand our Welcome Table leadership so that more people have the chance to serve. We are exploring ways to more fully integrate some of our tenets because in many ways our ministries overlap.

Outside of our church walls we will continue to develop relationships with our immediate neighbors and other stakeholders addressing issues facing those impacted by homelessness. We will work on expanding our voices throughout the district in a number of areas to impact policies or structures that do not respect the dignity of God's creation, both human and environmental.

Part of my vision for this upcoming year is to work with the lay and ordained leadership at Epiphany to better meet the needs of all who call this church home. We are also committed to being proactive to see where we need to shift and what we need to highlight to be a hospitable place of worship for those who have not yet found us. A significant component of our ability to reach out effectively is being able to articulate well how we understand our beloved community. To help us move in this direction I invite you to be on the lookout for new opportunities for Christian formation, new ministry groups, revamped ministry groups, and events that allow for developing deeper community. One of our first steps will be to have a ministry day on Feb. 4 th following the 11am service. This day will be a time of information and training around current ministries, it will also be a time of intentional fellowship. More information about this will be forthcoming. As always, if you have thoughts about ways that we can enhance what we are doing and how we are doing it please communicate with me. Also, please remember that you are an important part of the ministry that happens in and from Epiphany.

We have a vital role in this part of the kingdom as this part of the Body of Christ. It is an exciting time, maybe even a scary time as we contemplate change, but it is a faith filled time and God has promised to be by our side. You continue to be in my prayers.

Happy New Year!

There is so much going on at Epiphany and we are so grateful for the contributions you all offer towards making this happen. There are a few areas where we could really use your help! Please have a look at the list below and think where you might feel you could benefit from and contribute to the life of our community.

Sundays:
The Welcome Table team are looking for more volunteers to help in the kitchen and dining room. Please contact Maria Hunter if you are interested in getting involved in this important aspect of our ministry at Epiphany ( mhunter@strategicm.com).

Liturgical Leaders: We are always looking for people to help with the important ministries that make our Sunday worship possible. We welcome new additions to the ranks of greeters, ushers, readers, lay Eucharistic ministers, as well as the flower guild, and altar guild. If you are interested in learning more about any of these roles, please contact Catriona ( claing@epiphanydc.org ).
