Greetings from the China Gateway Director
Dear colleagues and friends,

A brand new year brings brand new ideas. Here at the China Gateway, we would like to introduce our latest column, "What's New in China." In each newsletter, this feature will focus primarily on recent developments in China, specifically in the areas of education and technology. This month's issue sheds light on China's rapid growth in transportation.
Sincerely,

Phoebe You
What's New in China
Rental bike apps having taken the entire country by storm, and traveling on foot is now easier than ever. Open WeChat or Alipay on your phone, quickly scan, and a city rental bike is yours for as long as you please. Streets in China are teeming with these city bikes creating a sea of orange and yellow. Most apps go at a rate of 1 RMB per hour, making them not only easily accessible, but also incredibly affordable. Companies like Mobike and ofo dominate the city bike app industry. Operating in an oligopoly, both companies are based in Beijing, but have launched bikes in more than 200 cities nationwide. The two companies have already begun expanding to other parts of the globe including countries in Europe, North America and even Australia.
As you are all likely aware, the city of Columbus won the Smart City Challenge in 2016. The U.S. Department of Transportation granted Columbus $40 million to reinvent the concept of mobility. Using cutting-edge research and innovative technology, Smart Columbus will work towards a brighter future. The city's chief goals are to expand accessibility, enhance quality of life and foster sustainable forms of mobility.
Later this year, Ohio State will host the first ever Pan-China Forum "Smart City, Smart Mobility." Esteemed Ohio State researchers, technology frontier experts and academic and business professionals will gather at this event to share insight about this ever-growing industry. As China's transportation and mobility industry continues to soar, Columbus is headed in the right direction.

Ohio State Alumni in Greater China
The 2017 end-of-year celebrations brought together many alumni in the Buckeye Clubs of Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan. All events were highlighted with Facebook and WeChat shares. Relationships initiated at Ohio State were strengthened, solidified and transformed during this exciting holiday season.
During December, the Beijing and Shanghai Alumni Clubs hosted events themed in Scarlet and Gray to pay tribute to the holidays with Buckeye pride. The China Gateway cultivated this initiative by coordinating events between alumni and potential students. The office recently coordinated a Buckeye reunion in Taiwan with graduates from the classes between 1980 and 2016. Alumni in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan held a Cotton Bowl game party and watched the Buckeyes dominate the Trojans 24-7. To round out the year, Shanghai hosted Big 10 and Beijing hosted a Big10+ Boston Schools parties respectively, which were organized by Ohio State Alumni Club board members. Other alumni events were hosted by groups of volunteers including Nio's house visit in Beijing and a joint social event in Shanghai with the Paris Institute of Technology.
Special recognition is given to all who go above and beyond to make new connections and keep old friendships going strong. May the year of 2018 keep Buckeye Nation moving ever forward. Go Bucks!
AUCA Finance and Business Career Fair
The 2017 AUCA Finance and Business Career Fair took place on December 19 in Shanghai. It was the fourth career fair Ohio State has cohosted since 2016. Other participating partner universities included University of Southern California, University of Virginia and Washington University - St. Louis. Compared to the summer career fair in 2017, this event was smaller in size and was oriented towards students in the finance and business fields. In total, this event drew 474 registered attendants, and 61 were from Ohio State.
Phoebe You, director of the Ohio State China Gateway, gave welcome remarks on behalf of all hosting and participating universities. Following Phoebe's remarks, academic and industry leaders shared their career advice to all the attendants.
In order to continue to improve professional development opportunities for Chinese alumni, the China Gateway will seek to engage more employers, students and alumni at career fairs in 2018 with the possibility of hosting these events in other cities and regions in China.
